Cenergy Safety Share/Topic: Working Safely in an Aerial Lift
Overview:
Aerial lifts—such as boom lifts and scissor lifts—are powerful tools that help us reach elevated work areas safely and efficiently. But if used improperly, they can lead to serious injuries or even fatalities. Here are some key safety practices to follow every time you operate or work in an aerial lift.
1. Pre-Use Inspection
Before using any aerial lift, always perform a thorough inspection:
Check for visible damage to the lift structure, controls, tires, and guardrails.
Test all functions, emergency controls and alarms.
Inspect the work area for overhead hazards, uneven ground, unstable ground or drop-offs.
Verify that fall protection equipment is in safe condition.
2. Wearing Proper Fall Protection
For boom lifts, fall protection is required. Wear a full-body harness and connect it to the designated anchor point inside the lift using a lanyard or self-retracting lifeline (SRL).
Never tie off to guardrails or structures outside of the lift.
3. Operate with Caution
Only trained and authorized personnel should operate aerial lifts.
Keep both feet firmly on the floor—no standing on boxes, buckets, ladders, or railings.
Close entry gates or chains before moving or raising the lift.
Stay inside the platform. Never lean over or climb out.
Be mindful of wind speed—most lifts should not operate in wind above 25-28 mph (check your lift’s manual).
4. Be Aware of Surroundings
Maintain a safe distance from power lines (minimum 10 feet). Always determine safe work distance requirements based on voltage.
Watch for swing radius hazards, especially near structures or people.
Never drive or transport the lift with the platform elevated.
5. Emergency Preparedness
Know how to use the emergency lowering controls.
Never disable alarms or safety features.
Keep clear communication with ground personnel at all times.
Key Reminder:
Working in an aerial lift isn't just about getting the job done—it's about getting it done safely. Your life depends on proper training, planning, and protection.
Quick Safety Tips:
Use the right PPE: hard hat, safety glasses, safety harness.
Inspect equipment prior to use.
Never use the lift as a crane.
Don’t exceed the rated weight limit of the lift.
Report all hazards or equipment issues immediately.
