Tuesday tip? Had to put the fixture plates back on the machines and went through and cleaned everything to make sure it was all good to go!

Being a one man show sometimes makes you think of ways to get better. The bigger machines plate is a pain to do by yourself so I came up with this method to get it aligned easier.

Do you have any tricks for aligning fixture plates to the t slots?

Today is National Manufacturing Day…. I can’t think of a better way to show how I think manufacturing is doing then to start with showing the Practical Machinist booth at IMTS.

Everyone came out to support the industry, and I mean the entire industry. In April of 2025 I was feeling burnt out, didn’t know if I wanted to keep Zealous going and Practical Machinist reached out to do my shop tour video. I can say it kind of changed my outlook. I would join the PM team a short couple of months later and get involved.

At IMTS it was clear, the words at the beginning of my shop tour said by Lakewood Machine & Tool weren’t just for fun, “the men and women who aren’t taking no for an answer and starting their own shop” I had many people ask questions about starting a shop, more then I ever imagined.

Manufacturing is alive and well, and we as machinists, engineers (yes they’re important too 😂) programmers, shop owners, shop managers,etc. owe it to keep building this industry.

You want to start a shop or have started a shop…..my take in a small mini series format.

First off, I’m not going to lie it’s going to be super hard to watch others start at the same time as you or after you and surpass you, that’s human nature I think. Everyone’s story is different and everyone grows at a different pace.

While it might be upsetting sometimes it’s best to put the blinders on and just keep moving forward. Every day try to take one thing from the past and get a little bit better at it. Day after day and you will grow. I tell people “the only thing stopping you, is you” and this is what I mean by that.

Social media is usually the highlight reel, not enough people show the journey or the struggle to get to the highlights and only we can change that. Be relatable, show the real struggles. At the Machinist Hub by Practical Machinist it was clear people wanted realism.

We could deliver that. People running way more complex parts on machines that cost more then my house came up to me and said thanks for the content, and keep doing it. That struck me, we’re doing something not many others do and that’s showing what is real.

This Micro Dynamics demo was pretty wild at IMTS

3” face mill 90% step over 1/4” depth of cut -mild steel
Followed by a 45mm drill -mild steel

15k rpm spindle at 41hp. When I first saw it it was cutting air but then they changed the offset and ran it. No air assist either.

These looks to be gaining some traction and popularity in the market and I think we will see more of these on shop floors.
