As the Wisconsin State Fair wraps up for another year, we're looking back at a visit that was equal parts fun and fact-finding. Our team walked Wisconsin State Fair Park alongside Zimmerman Architectural Studios, Inc. and GH2 Architects LLC and while the cream puffs and Giant Slide are hard to beat, we may have been paying a little more attention to the infrastructure.

Harwood is part of the design team selected to help reimagine Wisconsin State Fair Park's agricultural facilities. The project will consolidate the Swine Barn, Sheep/Goat Barn, Farm and Family Building, and Poultry & Rabbits tent into one modern, flexible facility operating year round.

Behind the scenes, our engineering team will help bring it all together — from new water, sewer and electrical infrastructure and stormwater management to HVAC, lighting, and specialized agricultural systems designed to meet the unique needs of Agriculture Village.

The goal is simple: infrastructure that works just as hard as the people who make Agriculture Village happen.

Waterparks are built for fun, but they depend on serious engineering, construction, and maintenance to operate safely and reliably.

On National Waterpark Day, we'd like to recognize the engineers, technicians, operators, and staff working behind the scenes to keep these facilities running and families enjoying their day. 🌊

Some people find their calling in a textbook. Arianna Moore found hers in a building.

While writing a high school research paper on architect and structural engineer Santiago Calatrava, Arianna became fascinated by the Milwaukee Art Museum — a striking landmark right in her own city — and began asking the kinds of questions that lead people into engineering careers.

Fast forward to today: Arianna has graduated from Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) with a Bachelor's in Architectural Engineering (Structural), earned a spot on the Dean's List with High Honors, and is now joining us at Harwood Engineering as our newest intern this summer!

As Arianna puts it: "The more I learned about architectural engineering at MSOE, the more I realized my passion was in structural engineering — and that's why I strive to build my career there."

She found us at the MSOE Career Fair last fall, and we're so glad she did. Welcome to the Harwood family, Arianna! 👋

What if your building could generate its own power? ⚡

We had a great time sharing insights at this year’s AIA Wisconsin conference on how solar integration is changing the way we think about design. From rooftops to façades, buildings are becoming part of the energy solution, without sacrificing style.

As sustainability becomes more important to our clients, these strategies are helping lower costs, reduce environmental impact, and build smarter for the future.

Curious what that looks like in practice? Take a look:

Explore practical strategies for seamlessly integrating solar into building design, improving energy performance, reducing costs, and supporting long-term sustainability goals.

What does a day in the life of an engineer actually look like?

University of Wisconsin-Platteville engineering students headed to the Harwood office to find out. Our team (including Harwood's own Platteville alumni Tom, Victoria, and Tyler) gave them an all-access look at our current projects and the history behind our renovated office space.

We love providing this kind of transparency to help future engineers bridge the gap between theory and practice. Thanks for bringing such great energy to the office today!
