Department of Biomedical Engineering The BBC aims to foster the collaboration of interdisciplinary fields to promote the application of novel technology in biomedical research.

The BME Department brings together the renowned engineering education and research expertise of Marquette and the innovative medical research and clinical practice of MCW to provide an extraordinary education for the next generation of engineers, scientists and physicians. Undergraduate and graduate students advance their learning, problem-solving skills and research experience through exposure to

both engineering leaders and faculty physicians who are working on innovations to benefit patients and the community. Kristen Westdorp, graduate student in the BBC, will be running the NYC marathon in just a few short months. Kristen will be running the marathon as part of a small (20 person) charity team for the Huntington's Disease Society of America. The other team members are spread across the United States, but Kristen will be solely representing the generous folks of the Midwest.

Dr. Brian Hoffmann was recently awarded a one year MAYO Clinic Metabolomics Resource Core Pilot Grant for his proposal entitled “The Influence of Sugar, Artificial Sweeteners, and the Microbiome on Metabolism”. This study aims to define the metabolic alterations associated with the processing of sugars and artificial sweeteners commonly found in food and to examine how the microbiome (bacteria within the digestive system) influences this process to alter overall health outcomes.
