Tariffs are affecting more than the price of imported products. Theyā€™re also changing the cost of steel and aluminum, manufacturing equipment, and ultimately the parts American machine shops produce.

At the same time, higher import costs are changing the calculation for companies that source machined components overseas. Once you factor in freight, lead times, inventory, quality, communication, and supply-chain risk, domestic manufacturing may be more competitive than the piece price suggests.
