Last week, our team headed to Brit’s Pub for our annual lawn bowling outing. It was a great afternoon to step away from the office, enjoy some friendly competition, and spend time together as a team.

Thanks to everyone who joined us and made it another memorable ISS tradition!

Most site visits begin by looking at the roadway.

The best ones begin by watching the people using it.

In this edition of Field Notes, we explore how observing exposure, constraints, repetition, and speed can reveal the conditions that create risk—long before crash data tells the story.

Speed doesn’t become dangerous everywhere—it becomes dangerous somewhere.

Join Seth Anderson at the ITE Western District Annual Meeting as he shares a practical framework for identifying harmful speeds by combining speed, exposure, and behavior to uncover where risk is greatest before crashes occur.

We hope to see you there!

The first story usually isn’t the whole story.

A Cleveland corridor project initially focused on bicycle activity. But movement data revealed something else: hundreds of pedestrians crossing midblock while vehicles traveled nearly 15 mph over the speed limit.

The behavior was already there. The review just made it visible before the project moved too far in the wrong direction.

This Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the courageous men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their dedication, bravery, and selflessness have protected the freedoms we enjoy every day.

At Image Sensing Systems, we are grateful for those who served and for the families who continue to carry their legacy forward.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day as we reflect, remember, and honor our heroes.

🚸 What’s more convincing: a statistic or seeing the moment unfold?

“36 midblock pedestrian crossings per day” tells you something is happening.

But a short video clip shows how it’s happening — the hesitation, the timing, the lack of margin for error, and the reality people are navigating in real time.

Our latest Field Notes explores why visual context changes conversations around roadway safety and decision-making. It’s a reminder that data points people to a problem, but seeing behavior often drives action.

“No Turn on Red” is often treated as a simple safety fix. But in practice, it can introduce new risks when it doesn’t align with how people actually behave.

When restrictions feel unnecessary, compliance drops. When behavior becomes inconsistent, predictability disappears. And when NTOR replaces more targeted fixes, the underlying problem often remains.

The real question isn’t whether NTOR is good or bad—it’s whether it matches the conditions on the ground.

This week’s Field Notes looks at where it falls short—and why that matters.

Crowdsourced data shows you where to look. But it doesn’t show how people actually move.

That gap matters. Because the real question isn’t just where is the problem?—it’s whether the street design matches how people are actually using it.

The strongest insights don’t come from choosing one dataset over another. They come from combining the big picture with what’s happening on the ground.
