In 1987 Kraus-Anderson converted Northwestern Milling Company’s long-abandoned Elevator A into the Ceresota Building. Part of a larger effort to repurpose the mill buildings on the west side of St. Anthony Falls and breath new life into what had become an industrial wasteland, this project had a historic focus, and the preservationist instinct ended up defining the building. The Ceresota brand of flour was already well-established in 1908 when Elevator A, the largest brick grain elevator ever, was completed. The massive, unglazed wall that faces downtown Minneapolis made a perfect billboard and was used to advertise Northwestern Milling’s signature brand. Not wanting to disturb this now-iconic painted wall, the architects behind the 1987 conversion devised an award-winning solution: The space inside this part of the building is focused on an interior atrium, and the windowless wall is clad in mirrors, making the atrium appear much larger than it is. A semicircular granite fountain butts up to the mirror, making the fountain appear to be a full circle, and reinforcing the illusion created by the reflective wall. The Ceresota Building was initially converted to offices, but in 2015 it was converted to senior residential apartments called Miller’s Landing.

Thank you Des Moines Business Record for this lovely write up on our new director of business development for the KA Des Moines office, Amanda Zwanziger! We can't wait to see all the ways she helps us grow while continuing to maintain the highest quality of service in the Iowa market.

You wouldn’t know it to speak with her, but Amanda Zwanziger used to have stage fright and a fear of public speaking. Today, the new director of business development for Kraus-Anderson’s Des Moines office thrives at speaking publicly and building relationships that can only happen through face-t...

Kraus-Anderson can’t claim to have built the Minnesota State Capitol. When excavation work began in the mid 1890s, KA’s founder J.L. Robinson was just starting out in business. Besides, construction was so territorial at this point in history that a Minneapolis firm wouldn’t dare to dream of such a contract. However, as minor repairs fill the time between major renovations, buildings like the Capitol are never really completed. So, when Kraus-Anderson opened a St. Paul office in the 1950s, KA was occasionally privileged to work on Minnesota’s architectural seat of government. The scant records only hint at the scope of work. A 1955 job for the “Division of Purchases, State of Minnesota” was described as: “Remodel State Supreme Court office.” Another, more mysterious entry reads: “steel circular stairway, State Capital.” The helpful people at the Minnesota Historical Society, who operate an information office at the Capitol, assure me that the only circular steel stairways currently used are those that access the Capitol’s dome. I was able to photograph the first set; the higher stairway (also, I’m assured, steel and circular) is tucked behind one of the dome’s pillars. Exactly what work Kraus-Anderson performed in the 1950s is far from certain, but KA is honored to be part of the ongoing story of the Minnesota State Capitol building. The image of the Minnesota State Capitol, likely its dedication ceremony, is courtesy of the Minnesota Historical Society.

Shoutout to Natalie, Amber, and Cora 👏 what a small but mighty team they made yesterday at Every Meal!

In less than two hours, these three packed 3,666 bags. That translates to over 14,000 nutritious meals heading straight to schools across Minnesota!

These bags go directly into the backpacks of children experiencing food insecurity, making sure they have plenty to eat over the weekend when school meals aren't available.

We’re so proud of the energy and heart they brought to make a tangible difference in our communities.

We had a blast celebrating Denny Erb's retirement and over 14 years of dedication to KA as a labor foreman! We could not do what we do (obviously) without the hard work and dedication of our team members in the field. Happy to celebrate Denny with a well-deserved BBQ! 🍔

Over the life cycle of a building, only about 20 percent of the expense of ownership is reflected in the initial building cost. Facilities Assessment is a wise approach to planning for and making the best use of the other 80 percent of your investment.

Kraus-Anderson’s team has decades of experience evaluating and advising on hundreds of properties. We offer comprehensive analysis of building systems and structures, identifying and prioritizing improvements that provide owners with data-driven strategies for maximizing the return on investment.
