Houston, we have a problem. We can’t leave an old building alone.

Especially when there’s this much worth saving.

Before our future headquarters starts taking shape, we’re working backward a little. Years of paint, coatings and buildup are coming off the existing wood and masonry so the original structure can become part of what comes next.

Which, for the time being, means respirators, coveralls and a whole lot of blasting.

This building has already lived a few lives. We’re pretty excited to give it another one.

One slab. No second chances.

The finished entry feels calm now. Getting it there took a few careful moves.

Dovetail Furniture Co. handled the grain-matched white oak cabinetry, packing full-height storage and a lit bench into a really clean footprint, then carried that same finish onto the Simpson entry door. Our crew cut the door down and installed it on site, with Emtek hardware throughout.

Then there was the stone.

Behind the bench is a one-of-one slab of leathered Lazuli Quartzite. It started at IGS in Bozeman, made the trip to Spokane for the leathered finish, then came back to Missoula for fabrication and install by Integrity Granite.

There wasn’t a backup slab sitting around if something went sideways, and our clients loved this one. Needless to say, everyone involved treated it accordingly.

Safe to say there were a few relieved faces once that piece was finally home.

Same foundation. Very different home.

We’re into framing on this modern home in Missoula’s Upper Rattlesnake, and the renderings are starting to look a little more familiar.

Rather than starting over, we’re building from the foundation of the home that previously occupied the site. New openings will bring more daylight and proper egress to the lower level, while the new framing above completely reshapes what was here before.

There’s also a lot going into this home that won’t be nearly as visible once we’re finished. Staggered 2x6 framing within 2x8 exterior walls, four inches of Rockwool, a carefully detailed v***r barrier, and locally made Glo Fenestration will all work together toward a tighter, more efficient envelope.

Eventually, standing-seam metal, steel, stone, integrated exterior blinds, and a solar roof with battery backup will bring the renderings you’re seeing here to life.

For now, we’re on schedule with plenty to share over the next few months.

Not carrying the load. Still doing plenty of heavy lifting.

Some of the timber beams in this home are structural, but these beams are here for a different reason.

Our friends at Montana Timber Products supplied the material, and our crew handled getting these heavy suckers overhead, lined up, and exactly where they needed to land.

They may not be holding the house up, but they carry a whole lot of the design. Swipe through to see how they look once the room came together.

Morning light was being pretty generous in here.

Linley’s Cabinets did their thing again on this kitchen, with custom cabinetry wrapping the space from the farmhouse sink to the paneled Sub-Zero, all finished with warm bronze hardware.

A Wolf range anchors the other side, paired with stone from Integrity Granite and plenty of morning light pouring into the room.

One of the quieter details is underfoot. In this 1930s home, Burk Hardwood carefully matched the new flooring into the original narrow-strip hardwood, helping the remodeled kitchen feel like it’s always belonged here.

Plenty of new in this room. Just not at the expense of what was already good.

Turns out, the original built-in still had a few good ideas.

The cabinetry at the end of the main-floor hallway stayed right where it was, but it also gave us a starting point for the new built-ins Linley’s Cabinets created throughout this 1930s University Area home.

In the primary bedroom, that became a full wall of storage connected to the original without trying to copy it. The hallway piece kept its round pulls, while brass pulls from Emtek gave the new cabinetry a look of its own.

Elsewhere, the home’s original glass-and-brass door hardware was cleaned up and put right back to work.

The original stayed, the new work took a cue, and the home got a whole lot more storage.

Some entrances get better the closer you look.

From a distance, it’s the warm wood, black metal, and clean lines that pull everything together. Get a little closer and the details start doing their thing.

The front door is black walnut from RealCraft’s Carmel Series, finished in Luxe Oil Hazelnut Truffle and paired with Emtek’s Hercules lever. Around it, Montana Timber Products’ Ranchwood Artisan siding brings plenty of texture without competing for attention.

Add in the exposed timber, rain chains settling into that rusty patina, and landscaping chosen with the South Hills deer in mind, and there’s a lot happening before you even step inside.

This home sits high in Stone Mountain on Mount Dean Stone, with a wall of Sierra Pacific windows taking in some of the best views in the Missoula Valley.

From the University of Montana to Ch-paa-qn Peak, there’s a whole lot of Missoula to look at from up here.

Morning coffee, sunset cocktail, or a few quiet minutes somewhere in between. This is a pretty good spot to drink it all in.

This Zen garden took some work.

We beefed up the floor trusses to support nearly 1,000 pounds of sand, and our friends at Dovetail used 12 whole gallons of glue to build the walnut slat wall. Neither number feels especially Zen, but we can explain.

The client wanted black walnut to tie into the other built-ins throughout the home. Milling every slat from solid walnut would have been wildly expensive and a hell of a task to keep straight, so Dovetail took a smarter route: poplar cores wrapped in black walnut veneer they sawed in-house.

This isn’t the paper-thin veneer most people picture, either. It’s cut up to 3/16” thick, giving them plenty to work with for a proper finish while using walnut where it matters most.

Every slat settles into a notched top rail with enough room for the wood to move naturally. A small gap above also hides the LED lighting that gives the wall its glow.

At the heart of the whole space is the client’s heirloom stone temple. The garden gives an important family piece a beautiful place of its own within the home.
