WHAT REALLY DETERMINES THE PRICE OF AN INJECTION MOLDED PART?

When a customer supplies the resin, you might think the material cost is removed from the equation. Well, that is not the case.

Cost for Injection molding fall into these two categories:

FIXED COSTS:
These are costs associated with getting the job ready and keeping the injection molding operation running, regardless of how many parts are produced during a particular run.

Examples include:
• Mold setup and changeover
• Process engineering
• Tooling maintenance
• Quality requirements
• Production scheduling
• Administrative overhead
• Insurance

VARIABLE COSTS:
These injection molding increase as volume increases.

Examples include:
• Machine/cycle time
• Direct labor
• Electricity & utilities
• Packaging
• Secondary operations
• Scrap material

So, what happens when YOU supply the resin?

The resin cost is removed from the molder's material charge—but the material that is supplied still affects molding processes.

Resin type, grade, melt characteristics, drying requirements, processing temperature and part weight can all influence cycle time, machine requirements, quality and overall production efficiency. This means two parts that look similar can have significantly different molding costs.

Another important factor is volume.

Higher production quantities can spread setup and other fixed costs over more parts, potentially lowering the per-part price.

In plastic injection molding, a mold is more than just a piece of machined metal - it is a high-precision, major capital investment that is undertaken by our customers.

When a mold is in our possession, we assume a profound fiduciary and operational responsibility to protect this asset. One way we do that is to create a Planned Maintenance Schedule (PM).

A PM is a proactive, time-based routine designed to inspect, clean, lubricate, and repair injection molds before failure or excessive wear occurs. Instead of waiting for a catastrophic tool crash, a PM program treats tooling with the same systematic care as a commercial aircraft engine.

A well-planned PM typically involves the following tiered intervals:

End-of-Run (Short-Term) Care: Routine cleaning of parting lines, venting residue removal, checking for minor flash, and applying rust preventative inhibitors before putting the tool away.

Cycle-Based Milestones (e.g., every 10,000, 50,000, or 100,000 cycles): Detailed inspections involving, checking ejector pins, guide pins, and bushings for scoring or wear. Inspecting hot runner systems, nozzles, and wiring. Cleaning cooling lines to prevent scale blockages and thermal imbalances. Measuring critical tolerance dimensions to catch wear early.

Major Overhauls / Refurbishment: Deep restoration work, which may involve re-machining core/cavity surfaces, applying advanced techniques like laser welding for precision repair, or replacing fatigued springs and seals.

End of Life: A mold should be replaced It requires repeated repairs, has dimensional drift, shows visible cracks, has obsolete components, experiences cycle time increases and/or if production demand changes.

We recall the evolution of injection molding and tie it to our expertise as a custom, plastic injection molder in California.

Late 19th Century Origins:
Plastic injection molding began in 1872 when John and Isaiah Hyatt patented the first machine to solve an ivory shortage for billiard balls. Operating like a giant hypodermic needle, their primitive system used a hand-cranked plunger to force molten celluloid into a mold. This kickstarted a fledgling industry creating simple consumer items like buttons and hair combs. By the 1930s, safer polymers like polystyrene and PVC emerged, demanding more advanced manufacturing methods.

Wartime and the Moving Screw:
Shortages of rubber and industrial metals during World War II pushed manufacturers to adopt plastics as lightweight, affordable substitutes. Then in 1946, James Watson Hendry invented the extrusion screw injection machine. Hendry’s machine used mechanical friction to mix and heat plastic uniformly before injecting it.
