Trucking and transport work requires lots of time sitting and driving but rewards you with beautiful scenery most everywhere you drive. I'm constantly amazed by the wide variety of scenery we get to enjoy as Americans traveling throughout the 50 states in this great nation.

I took a trip to West Virginia to bring two Fairmont Motorcars back to the Stewartstown Railroad Company for restoration and use in their tourist operation. If you want to take a short but scenic train ride through the countryside of southern York County, PA, I encourage you to visit The Stewartstown Railroad Company, in Stewartstown, PA. It has a small but dedicated group of volunteers, including myself, who are working to preserve the heritage of the once prominent local railroad.

This particular job brings my work endeavors full circle back to my days working as a Merchant Mariner.

Today I was transporting an electric personnel lift from the "Cape R's" Ready Reserve Ships in Portsmouth, VA up to "Cape W's" Ready Reserve Ships in Baltimore, MD. The Cape Washington is actually the last ship I worked on as a Second Assistant Engineer before I came ashore full time to pursue a longtime dream of having an excavating and trucking business.

The Ready Reserve Fleet (RRF) is a fleet of military ships owned by the United States Maritime Administration (MARAD) and crewed by civilian mariners like my brother and I. The need was brought about during the first Gulf War when the United States realized that they needed a fleet of marine vessels to transport military equipment and personnel over to the Middle East. The ships are strategically pre-positioned, at various ports around the United States to be available should the need arise to move equipment and maintained at a level where they can be "activated" to full operational status in about a week's time.

Here's another satisfying job I just wrapped up in September:

The project request was a shed pad that would stand the test of time and handle any rain from the shed roof without gutters/downspouts.

The old concrete slab was removed once the old sheet-metal shed kit was disassembled. Then the subgrade was established, and concrete piers set to support the pressure treated 6"x6" border. This was done to prevent the warping typical of pressure treated timber as it ages and experiences heavy foot traffic and lawn equipment crossings.

Filter fabric was placed to keep the gravel where it belongs while preventing contamination from the soil as well as allow natural drainage by saturation into the ground. The 6"x6" wood border was installed and a house foundation style drain tile system was added to carry away excess storm water that may accumulate in the gravel base during heavy rain fall.

Then we placed 21 tons of gravel inside the border and backfilled around the pad to divert storm water flow from neighboring properties away from the shed pad. The final grade was dressed with some screened topsoil, after which I added the necessary grass seed, starter fertilizer and a generous covering of straw to protect the new lawn while it became established.

Despite dry conditons through mid-September, daily watering of the new grass by the homeowner yielded impressive grass seed germination. After two weeks, most of the disturbed areas were almost completely blended into the existing lawn.

Thank you Albert for trusting me to complete this work for you.

Catching up on some work we've done in the last year.

This was a nice project. I was asked to come in behind a tree company after they had removed some large trees and ground down the stumps.

The project scope was for me to remove the wood chips from the stump grinding operation, remove the mound in the middle of the yard that developed around the previous trees and stumps and regrade most of the back yard to smooth out the ruts, lumps and prepare the ground for new grass.

Thank you Matt and Shelby for the opportunity to help give your yard a fresh look. Photo credits to Matt for the progress shots of the tree work and the grading while I was running my machine and for the follow up photo once the new grass was established.

More work for the railroad! This 1/8 mile of track was covered over with nearly 30 years of silt from stormwater runoff from surrounding areas. We cleared the track gauge (between the rails) and cleared away the soil along both sides of the ties. Again, the primary purpose of this work is to make it easier for the maintenance crews to replace the rotten ties with new ties.

This project was during some of the hottest weather we had this summer. Since there wasn't any rain forecast and grass seed was planted, we needed water to help the grass become established. Adapt and overcome! So we built our own irrigation rig. Capable of carrying 1,375 gallons, we can cover some ground and bring the much needed rain instead of waiting for mother nature to deliver.

Contact us today. We'd be happy to meet the demands of your challenging project. Big or small, we do it all!!!
