This is Baker grit in action.

Earlier this summer, our team in South Florida completed the mat foundation placement at the St. Regis Residences Sunny Isles project in Miami.

Over 19 continuous hours, more than 150 Baker co-workers placed 8,262 cubic yards of concrete across an 18,975-square-foot mat foundation. The operation required three shifts, 145 concrete trucks in rotation, five concrete pumps, and months of planning that began during preconstruction.

Located approximately 25 feet below the water table and adjacent to the beach, the foundation presented tight logistics and complex site conditions. Thanks to detailed planning and close coordination among Baker, the client, and trade partners, the team executed the foundation placement safely and successfully.

As Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBAU) has continued to grow, so has the need for modern student housing. That’s where Baker came in.

As part of a team assembled by Gilbane Building Company, Baker delivered the cast-in-place concrete scope for a new 26-story housing tower in downtown West Palm Beach, FL.

Building on an active university campus presented unique challenges. Throughout construction, the Baker team maintained strict safety controls and carefully managed logistics to keep construction activities separated from students, faculty, and everyday campus life. The project was also notable for its use of column-hung table systems instead of conventional truss shoring, allowing Baker to maintain an efficient schedule.

A strong industry needs a strong next generation.

For 30 years, the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program has been preparing students for careers in concrete by combining business education, technical knowledge, and hands-on experience. Today, more than 1,800 CIM graduates are putting those skills to work across the industry, with the program reporting a near 100% job placement rate.

Baker is proud to support CIM and its work to develop future industry leaders. Our CEO, Karl Watson Jr., also serves as Chairman of the CIM National Steering Committee and shared his perspective with Concrete Products as the program celebrates this milestone.

“The sooner you start, the sooner you look back one day and realize all the growth and accomplishments you have made over the years.”

Even from a young age, Efrain Landaverde wanted to work in construction. Three years after graduating high school, he turned this goal into reality.

“A family member recommended I join Baker,” Efrain says. “They talked to me about a lot of growth opportunities there.”

Efrain started as a laborer. Despite not knowing much about construction, he quickly learned carpentry skills and why things are done the way they are on a site.

On subsequent projects, he tackled new opportunities such as operating heavy machinery and reading plans for grading. Within three years, he was helping to lead survey crews.

Since starting at Baker, Efrain has been able to look towards building his future life, starting with buying his own home.

“My career at Baker has allowed me to see different architecture styles and know how to structurally support buildings, which will eventually help me when it comes to building my own home,” Efrain notes. “You also get to explore new places when you travel out of town.”

Estimator Tyler Geloneck received his golden key earlier this year after purchasing a home.

"For us, this is about putting down roots," says Tyler, who purchased the home after relocating from Ohio to Raleigh, NC. "It feels good to have a place that's ours and a space where our family can grow."

Buying a home was an important goal for Tyler and his wife, and reaching it took planning and patience. Tyler says Baker also gave him the support he needed.
