🎓 Our employees' graduates did it again this year! 🎓

🎊 CONGRATULATIONS to Max Davis, Alexis Frisbee, and Kathryn Manzewitsch for being named Bechtel Global Scholars, a prestigious honor that includes a scholarship for the upcoming school year.

Each year, Bechtel Group Foundation funds scholarships for the children of Bechtel Corporation professionals worldwide. Twenty-five scholarships were usually awarded--and we are thrilled that Max, Alexis, and Kathryn were among those honored.

As has become tradition, award recipients and their (very proud!) parents were treated to lunch by BPMI President & General Manager Barb Staniscia and her Staff. The scholarship program is quite competitive, and being recognized as a Bechtel Global Scholar is certainly something to celebrate!

Three BPMI morale committees teamed up to host an All‑American, Star‑Spangled Social!

Employees enjoyed U.S.-themed trivia, great food and drinks, and a fundraiser supporting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Funds were raised through sales of custom-made 250th challenge coins and song requests performed by BPMI’s very own Jason Sottile.

Former Secretary of the Navy John Sullivan passed away 44 years ago on August 8, 1982 — and his legacy is a major chapter in the story of the Nuclear Navy.

Many know Admiral Hyman Rickover as the “Father of the Nuclear Navy,” but Rickover himself credited Sullivan as the “True Father of the Nuclear Navy.”

Here’s why:
In 1947, then Captain Rickover took the unprecedented step of pitching the idea of a nuclear powered submarine directly to Chief of Naval Operations, Chester W. Nimitz. Nimitz backed the bold proposal and brought it to Secretary of the Navy John Sullivan, who took the politically risky leap to authorize the pioneering research and development.

Seven years later, in January 1955, the USS Nautilus sent its iconic message: “Underway on Nuclear Power.” The world’s first nuclear powered vessel had arrived.

Sullivan’s support helped launch the nuclear fleet we rely on today, a fleet of submarines and aircraft carriers that safeguard our nation and that BPMI is proud to support.

Did you know U.S. Navy ships fly a whole collection of flags—each with its own purpose and tradition?

The most important is the U.S. flag, proudly flown at the stern while in port and from the mast when underway. Up front on the bow, you’ll find the Navy Jack: today a blue field with 50 stars, but originally a 13 star design dating back to 1777.

Personal flags mark the presence of senior leaders onboard—from high ranking Naval officers to the Secretary of the Navy and even the President. Command pennants signal which officers are leading forces, groups, squadrons, or divisions.

Commissioned Navy ships also display a commissioning pennant—long red and white stripes with a blue field and seven stars—symbolizing their active status.

For communication at sea, ships use a full set of standard signal flags: alphabet flags, numeral pennants, substitutes, and a code answering pennant.

And on special ceremonial days? Every flag is raised in a colorful bow to stern display known as full dress—one of the most striking sights in naval tradition.

Congratulations to the June graduating class of the BPMI Shipboard IT (SBIT) training program, Reactor Networks Training Course (RNTC)! BPMI is excited to host a few more training courses in 2026.

Our instructor highlight for this course is Ben. Ben has been at BPMI for about nine years and has worked in various network engineering and project management roles. In addition to his current work, Ben supports the RNTC by instructing multiple networking hardware lessons.
