Recent 120-tonne overhead bridge crane load testing from our Canadian team. At Unique Group’s , we understand the importance of downtime time and operate on the front lines of productivity.

Such is the case with this test, most of the kit required was tied up with other ongoing projects, but we needed to provide cost and operational aspirations while fulfilling the health and safety obligations of our customer. MRT Devices for steel wire rope inspections on Heavylift cranes from Unique Group’s .

Marine heavy lifting cranes can vary both in design and function to meet specific applications while ensuring optimal performance and safety. Whether doing ship-to-shore jobs or erecting infrastructure offshore, cranes are critical machines in all types of marine work. They are an important item of ship’s equipment, when they break down, it usually results in loss of hire claims. More importantly, failure of a deck crane can result in serious injury or death. Routine inspection and maintenance of the cranes should be carried out according to the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule including the wire ropes and should be incorporated into the ship’s planned maintenance system.

The MRT method allows the detection of broken wires, distortions, and corrosion on steel wire ropes. The equipment allows verification of the condition of wire ropes to highlight internal and external defects such as broken wires, cross-section reduction, distortions, and corrosion in a simple, quick, and objective way. The equipment is either portable or permanently installed for continued monitoring of the rope.

Permanently installed on cranes, the system allows constant monitoring and data logging of the wire rope condition, allowing for trending and establishing predictive maintenance schedules. The process eliminates downtime for unexpected activities such as rope replacement and helps the budget by only replacing the wire rope when necessary or during planned maintenance schedules.

For periodic testing, the system is portable and lightweight enabling use during planned inspections and planned maintenance stoppages when not permanently installed.
We also offer operative training teaching the correct usage of the inspection system, and most importantly, the interpretation of the signal. Both are done online, with the technical or practical part on-field. After about 6 months of practice, the inspector can then attend the ISO9712 Level 1 & 2 courses online which allows full compliance with the regulation norm. The ISO9712 certificate is valid for 5 years and completes the journey toward becoming an expert.
