Leaking Spigots After the Winter Freeze?
Spring seems to be right around the corner, and everyone will be itching to get outside with temps in the 70s week.
Spring is typically the time we head outside and begin making our yards beautiful again. This means that it is also the time that we will re-connect the hose to our outdoor faucet (also known as a spigot) after disconnecting it for the cold winter months. How do you inspect an outdoor faucet? How do you make sure the freezing temperatures didn’t cause any damage to your hose bibb?

Step 1
If you closed the indoor valve to your outdoor faucet last fall, turn the valve back to the “on” position. Look for signs of a leak around the pipe, along your basement ceiling, and along the interior walls of your basement. The greatest amount of damage from a frozen hose spigot can be to the interior of your home. Pay extra attention to signs of drywall damage if your basement is finished.

Step 2
Go to your outdoor faucet and turn on the water. Look for leaks along the wall beneath the hose bibb, such as water leaking from weep holes in brick homes. Water coming from your wall means that the hose bibb is damaged behind the wall and and should be replaced.

Step 3
If, after turning the water off, you notice water leaking from the handle or spigot of your outdoor faucet, it is possible that you could need a simple washer replaced inside of the hose bibb. It is also possible that the entire hose bibb may need to be replaced instead. Homes with a frost-proof bibb may give the appearance of a leak for a few seconds. This is simply the water draining from the pipe behind the faucet. This is normal for these types of hose bibbs.

Did you have sticker shock when you viewed your January gas bill? The cost of natural gas in on the rise! Note: The U.S. Department of Energy indicates that a 20-year-old furnace wastes at least 22 % of the energy it consumes. ...... Compare that to a new furnace whose AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating is 95%, meaning that you only lose half a dollar for every $10 dollars' worth of energy consumed by your furnace.

When it comes to your home’s heating, few things are more inconvenient and damaging to your overall comfort than having your furnace completely break down in the middle of winter. When the temperature outside begins to drop, you rely on your furnace to keep you warm, but it sometimes requires a little assistance to ensure that it can do its job effectively and efficiently.

Wagler and Sons Heating & Cooling wants to do everything we can to ensure your comfort in your home, which is why our team of skilled professionals in heating repairs has put together this short list of a few ways that regular furnace maintenance can help you avoid a breakdown in the middle of winter.

Improve Energy Efficiency
Your furnace, like your car, is a complex piece of machinery that requires regular maintenance to keep it running at peak efficiency. Regular maintenance on your furnace can help to improve its overall energy efficiency, just as having a tune-up for your car can improve its gas mileage.

Regular furnace maintenance will ensure that you get more energy for every dollar spent on fuel, as well as lower your overall energy consumption costs. Heating bills typically account for nearly 25% of total energy costs during the winter, and by improving the efficiency with which your unit operates, you could end up with a significant amount of extra money in your pocket at the end of the month.

Prevent the need for repairs and extend the life of your system.
Would you ever take your car on a cross-country road trip without first having it serviced? Hardly! It’s difficult to predict how far your car would go before you noticed problems, but it’s safe to assume that it wouldn’t go nearly as far as it would have if you had invested in getting it the care it needed before you left.

Your furnace works in much the same way, except that your furnace’s cross-country road trip occurs every winter when it is almost constantly used. Having regular maintenance performed on your furnace can help you catch any minor issues early on, before they develop into something more serious or cause serious damage to other components of your furnace. This will significantly increase the lifespan of your furnace while also lowering the number of future repairs you will have to invest in.

Maintain Your Warranty
While not directly related to preventing a breakdown, keeping your warranty intact is critical if something out of your control ever happens and you find yourself in need of a new furnace. Most furnace warranties state that they must be professionally serviced at least once a year in order for the warranty to be valid. Nobody wants to be in a situation where something goes wrong with their furnace and they have to learn the hard way that their warranty has been invalid for several years because they neglected the annual maintenance requirement.
