PSA — WE ARE BACK!
To whom it may concern… here’s the story.
A few days before Christmas, the bathroom above our kitchen flooded. It ruined the bathroom, damaged the kitchen below, and made its way into the basement.
Thankfully, I was able to remove the contaminated materials, clean everything up, and get the affected areas dried out. Then came the long, tedious process of dealing with homeowners insurance, adjusters, the claim process, and everything that goes along with it.
Luckily, that part of the process is something I’m very familiar with, so my expectations and timeline were realistic.
As many of you know, when life throws you lemons, sometimes you have to figure out how to turn the situation into something positive — so that’s exactly what we decided to do.
When we moved into this house a few years ago, we thought it would be a pretty simple transition. It was relatively new, beautiful, and we didn’t think we would need to make many changes other than a few upgrades we had wanted to do for years but couldn’t do at our previous home.
After actually living here for a while, though, we realized we may have been slightly duped by the “smoke and mirrors” of the tall ceilings and open concept. 😂 We quickly realized our family could really benefit from a larger kitchen and living area.
There’s no better time than the present, so while things were already torn apart, we decided to make a few more changes.
Anyone who knows me knows that we are usually the people who come running when someone needs help. I’m constantly heading to emergency jobs, patching something for someone in a bind, dealing with leaks, water damage, repairs, or whatever else happens to come up.
But one thing I have always believed is that rushing through a job causes problems. It increases mistakes, compromises quality, and can even increase the risk of someone getting hurt.
Taking a few weeks to stop taking calls and focus on getting things moving at my own house was honestly very difficult for me.
For 10 months, we have been living in limbo while waiting on permits and going through the proper channels to make the changes we wanted.
For much of that time, the six of us had one working bathroom.
We had uneven and torn-up floors, no kitchen island, missing cabinets and countertops, and areas without drywall, insulation, ceilings, or lighting, and although we aren't back to normal, we are making strides forward.
Taking some time away from answering calls, texts, and emails undoubtedly rustled a few feathers, and I understand that, and is something I have to deal with.
For years I have made myself available to customers almost 24/7. I’ve always struggled to silence my phone, and I’ve even asked people for a little grace when I couldn’t immediately respond to an email, text, or call.
But these last few weeks needed to be different.
I was still able to get out to customers who had true emergencies — flooded basements, rain coming through garage ceilings, and situations that simply could not wait.
At the same time, I had TONS of customers reach out just to say:
“Take some time for you.”
“Take care of your house.”
“I can’t wait to see how everything turns out.”
And I have to tell you — THAT MADE MY HEART HAPPY.
The house is definitely not completely finished yet, but we made HUGE progress.
The bathrooms are about 99% complete, we got everything is closed up and weatherproof, and — perhaps most importantly —
I NO LONGER HAVE WATER COMING THROUGH MY KITCHEN CEILING! 😂
HOWEVER…
I AM BACK!
