Anything that exists within the vacuum system that hurts or inhibits its proper function is considered a contaminant and must be addressed. Cleanliness is incredibly important to keep the chamber free of contaminants. High and ultra-high vacuum applications require parts that are free from volatile materials that would lead to contamination of the vacuum system.

There are two types of vacuum system contaminants:
1 Contaminants that result in undesirable deposits within the system and cannot be pumped away.
2 Contaminants that result in additional partial pressure that enter the system as a gas and can be pumped away.

If your system won’t pump down to a specified pressure the residual trapped gasses within the chamber are considered contaminants. However, contamination of your system can also happen due to the introduction of non-gaseous particles as well as contamination that can occur during normal operation of the system.

A virtual leak is a trapped volume of gas within a vacuum chamber that cannot be easily pumped out due to restrictions in the path connecting the trapped gas to the main chamber. Virtual leaks reference a leak that cannot be found during any activities or tests performed outside of the vacuum chamber. The presence of a virtual leak will become apparent during the system pump-down cycle if the system cannot keep up with the gas load from the leak. The correct system pressure will either not be able to be reached or will take an excessive amount of time to reach.

High-temperature fasteners are used extensively in critical industries such as semiconductor, aerospace, automotive, and oil/gas. They are specially designed to be able to withstand high temperatures and extreme environments. On top of that they are designed to withstand the alternate phases of extreme heat and cooling without damaging the fastener. Fasteners created from alloys that are not designed for high-temperature environments will oxidize (corrode or rust) if used in these environments. The fasteners will also expand as the temperature rises, putting pressure on the hole it was driven into, then contract as the temperatures go back down, which makes them loose inside of the hole.
