It's probably not making your dream-home Pinterest board.

But when you're designing a kitchen, it's absolutely worth asking:

Where will the trash and recycling go?

Think beyond simply finding a cabinet for the bins.

Consider:

• Is the trash convenient to the food-prep area?
• Can someone throw something away without crossing through the person who's cooking?
• Do you need separate space for recycling?
• How easy will it be to take full bags outside or to the garage?
• Will the bins interfere with drawers, appliances, or another person's path through the kitchen?

Nobody shows off the trash cabinet when friends come over.

But getting its location wrong can annoy you approximately 47 times a day. 😄

Sometimes the least glamorous decisions are the ones that make a home work noticeably better.

When you're reviewing a floor plan, picture yourself opening the front door.
What's directly in front of you?

That first sightline can affect both the feel and privacy of your home.
Think about:

• Does the entry look straight into the kitchen — including whatever is sitting on the counters?
• Is a bathroom door visible from the foyer?
• Can someone at the front door see into private living spaces?
• Would you rather draw the eye toward a beautiful staircase, fireplace, or view outside?
• Is there enough separation between the entry and the places where everyday life happens?

It's a small detail on paper, but one you'll experience every time someone knocks on the door.

A thoughtfully planned entry can feel welcoming without putting your whole house on display.

Here's a detail that's easy to overlook when looking at a floor plan:

Which way do the doors open?

It sounds minor—until two doors collide, a bedroom door blocks a light switch, or an open closet door cuts off the walkway.

When reviewing a plan, think about:

• Whether doors will bump into each other
• What an open door blocks from view or access
• Whether furniture placement leaves enough clearance
• How closet and bathroom doors affect traffic flow
• Whether a pocket or sliding door might make better use of a tight space

A floor plan usually gets your attention with room sizes and layouts.

But everyday comfort often comes down to much smaller details.

Before you fall in love with a plan, mentally open every door.

That last line is the one I really like here. It gives people an actual little exercise they can do the next time they're looking at a floor plan instead of just telling them, “Pay attention to the details.”

A powder room — or half bath — is usually one of the smallest rooms in the house.
But because it’s often the bathroom guests use and is commonly located on the main floor near the home’s main living areas, its placement can have a surprisingly big impact on how comfortable the space feels.

Think about:

• Is the door directly visible from the kitchen or dining room?
• Will guests have enough privacy when they use it?
• Is it easy to find without wandering through private parts of the house?
• What rooms share a wall with it — and will sound carry?
• Can it be convenient without feeling like it’s sitting in the middle of everything?

It’s an easy room to treat as an afterthought on a floor plan.

But thoughtful placement can make a half bath convenient for everyday life and guests while still keeping it discreet.

Sometimes the smallest rooms deserve some of the most careful planning.
