Sunken Sanctuary Fire Pit Lounge
Building your in-ground fire pit lounge, often referred to as a Sunken Sanctuary, is a multi-phase structural project that creates a permanent, high-end "outdoor room."
Project: The Sunken Sanctuary
The Goal: Create a sophisticated, recessed social hub that offers wind protection and a sleek, architectural look.
The Strategy: Excavate a large-diameter area, use reinforced concrete forms for the walls and seating, and finish with a smooth architectural skim coat.
The Result: A high-end lounge that feels integrated into the landscape, providing a cozy, fire-side atmosphere.
Step-by-Step Construction Guide
Layout & Excavation: Mark a 12–15' circle. Excavate 18–24" deep, ensuring a slightly deeper center for the fire pit basin.
Drainage System: Install a central drain pipe leading to a dry well. Cover the floor with 4" of compacted drainage gravel and filter fabric.
Formwork for Walls & Benches: Build concentric plywood forms for the outer walls and "L-shaped" forms for the 18"-high built-in benches. Ensure heavy bracing for concrete pressure.
Rebar Cage Construction: Construct a continuous rebar cage throughout the walls and benches, tying vertical and horizontal bars to prevent future cracking.
The Monolithic Pour: Pour the base slab first, followed immediately by the walls and benches to create a single-piece structure.
Screeding & Leveling: Use a straight board to level the tops of the walls and benches. Perform an initial smooth with a magnesium float.
Stripping & Skim Coating: Remove forms after 48 hours. Apply a cement-based skim coat to achieve a uniform, glass-smooth finish.
Fire Pit & Final Touches: Build the center fire pit with fire bricks and high-heat mortar. Apply a high-quality masonry sealer to the entire area.
