Last week, we celebrated the Eastman Leadership Academy project coming to a close.

Bordeaux, Moseley Inc., Halifax County School District, and Raleigh Raised welcomed over 300 attendees, including alumni, members of the School Board, community leaders, and students ranging from grades PK-5 – to the Grand Re-Opening of the Eastman School.

The new Eastman Leadership Academy is constructed on the historic site of the original Eastman School, which began as an 18x20-foot schoolhouse in 1894, led by Miss Frankie B. Myrick. She secured a donation from nearby landowner and Kodak founder, George Eastman, to ensure the school’s continued development. With the time, labor, and resources of the community, the school continued to grow for nearly a century until its consolidation in 1981.

The event was a joyful celebration of the return of the Eastman School, which opens this Fall, and will accommodate 540 students in grades pre-kindergarten through eighth.

Last week was National Construction Safety Week – the perfect time to revisit our “Why” when it comes to safety on high-hazard jobsites.

We celebrated everyone who has a role to play in creating and maintaining a culture of care by holding numerous Safety Standdowns and raffling off gift cards and tools, with Milwaukee Tool joining us at JH Lea to finish out the week.

On Friday, we gathered with Pender County Schools, Pender County Board of Commissioners, and Moseley Inc. to celebrate “Topping Out” at the new J.H. Lea Elementary & Middle Schools.

Project Executive, Ben Warren, explained the significance of this milestone: “11 months ago, we started digging our first footing on what is one of the largest Public K8 Schools in the country. We stand here now to celebrate its Topping Out.”

“We have over 264,000 safe hours worked here without a lost time incident. That does not happen by accident, that happens with teamwork, trust and professionalism.”
