This has been our busiest July and August in 10 years, normally our slowest months of the year, but not 2017.
Over the past several months, I have received several Biodiesel production questions.
Many are re-occurring questions that may also help you, whether you are currently producing B100 Biodiesel or still researching the possibilities.
Question 1, which has come up a lot this year, is regarding feedstock. Many are looking for a feedstock short-cut, or to put it another way, looking for a supplier to buy from in bulk.
Buying feedstock from a rendering company is VERY RISKY. It may look like the most efficient solution, but it’s like letting someone else raise your children and complaining later about how they have grown up.
You need to control your feedstock source; Grease Collection Companies will pick up waste cooking oil, out of spec margarine and salad oils, trap grease, and animal waste. And it all goes into the same tank. They will tell you that it has been filtered, and that the water has been removed, but that does not change the NUMBER 1 THING that you are concerned with, the Free Fatty Acid level.
The waste cooking oil from McDonald’s is very different from the waste cooking oil from a local banquet and wedding hall.
McDonald’s WCO is always very high in Free Fatty Acid. Typically it is over 7% FFA. By the time McDonald’s is done using it, it is no longer anything you want either, they are typically the worst grease on the street.
While your local grocery store deli, banquet hall and locally owned restaurant will have WVO with less than 3% FFA and many times it is closer to 1%.
So what does all this 1% - 3% - 7% mean?
The lower the FFA percentage, the less it will cost to Process and the higher your yield of fuel will be.
For example, at 1% FFA you can expect a 97% Yield, while a 7% FFA will drop your yield to 60%.
It pays to control your feedstock.
Consider working with a local charity to collect your grease, it makes a great re-entry back into the work force as well as a great fundraising opportunity with fantastic tax benefits for you.
Along the same thought process, I get asked about what is needed for grease collection, how much time will it take to collect grease, and what do I say to the grease generating companies to get them to sell me their grease?
Let’s start with how to ask for the grease. First, realize EVERYONE has someone picking up their WVO currently. If they didn’t, it would be much like your home if the garbage man stopped showing up….it would be bad!
But here is the reality of the big rendering companies, they seldom honor the agreements they have in place and the WVO generator is being ripped-off, they hardly ever get paid for the grease.
First, make sure you are talking to the owner or local decision maker, don’t waste your time talking with anyone else. Second, start by saying the following;
“My name is ________, and I am looking for a little help. I am operating a local Biodiesel Plant to help our community have cleaner air, and strengthen our economy. I know you have (STATE NAME OF RENDERING COMPANY) currently picking up your used cooking oil. I don’t want you to stop using them, but if I could buy some of your grease on a regular basis, it would sincerely help.”
“Would you be willing to sell me some of your Cooking Oil, I am currently paying (I recommend $0.30-0.50 per gallon), and I pay for it when I pick it up?”
They may ask you to provide a container, or allow you to pump from the current container. They may also be willing to put the grease back in the carboy container it originally came in.
If you need grease collection containers, I provide Locking Grease Collection Lids on our website that fit open top 55 gallon drums. You can also use poly totes, they come in 220 gallon, 275 gallon and 330 gallon sizes and sell for $50 each on the secondary market.
Now let’s talk grease collection equipment. You can do it on a budget and get started for less than $1000, or can go all out and easily spend $10,000 and more.
So let’s assume you are like the rest of us, and you don’t have an unlimited budget. If you visit our website, you will find a turn-key Grease Collection Pump. The PORTABLE GREASE COLLECTION PUMP will take your grease collection to the next level. This pump includes a 212cc gasoline engine matched to a Semi Trash Pump, 1.5” Suction Side with 15 FT Suction Hose and 42” Suction Wand and a 1” Discharge Side with 15FT Discharge Hose. Add to this a 275 gallon tote or two and you are ready for grease collection with either a pick-up truck or a trailer to hold your totes.
Using the Semi Trash Gas driven Grease Collection pump, it will take you 5 minutes to pump 100 gallons of WVO.
This is what we have evolved to over the past 10 years.
The U S Freedom Bio Fuels, Grease Collection Trailer cost us $3000 to build, it has a capacity of 700 gallons, and utilizes the same Semi-Trash pump as above. We pull it with our 1997 ¾ ton Chevrolet Diesel pick-up. We collect grease on a regular schedule, 4 days per month, and we average 700 gallons per day.
So it is not a full time job to collect grease. Depending on your area and population, your collection time could be much less than my example. We travel 150 miles for two of our collection routes, because the area we live in is so sparsely populated.
Mosinee WI has a population of less than 4000 people.
Let’s wrap this up for now; we have covered feed-stock from local generators vs rendering companies. We covered how to approach the business owner to acquire their WVO, and possible solutions to grease containers.
And then we went into grease collection equipment, and finally the time required to collecting the grease.
It’s not hard work, but I didn’t say it was easy either. You have to be willing to step out, knock on some doors and make a commitment. In the end, it will be the most empowering and rewarding thing you can do for your bottom line.
Imagine, you control your fuel costs from this day forward. And your fuel isn’t costing you $2 a gallon or $2.50 a gallon. Your fuel is costing you less than a $1.00 regardless of the future price of Crude Oil.
You never have to ride the Fuel Price Roller Coaster again.
More to come…..
