Sometimes the best part of the job isn’t the repair, it’s the reminder of why we do what we do.

While fixing a broken AC system today, one of the kids in the house handed us this drawing to say thank you. It may just be crayons and marker on paper, but to us, it means a lot.

Getting the cold air back on matters, especially in this heat. But making a family comfortable again and seeing a kid this excited about it is what really makes the day.

Shade covers and decorative panels around outdoor AC units may look nice, but many of them restrict the airflow your condenser needs to properly reject heat. Your air conditioner is designed to move a massive amount of air, and when that airflow gets trapped or recirculated, system performance drops fast.

Restricted airflow can cause higher operating temperatures, increased energy usage, longer run times, poor cooling, and excessive wear on critical components like the compressor. In some cases, decorative enclosures can even contribute to premature system failure. Proper spacing, open airflow, and routine maintenance are far more important than trying to “shade” the unit. Your condenser needs room to breathe to operate efficiently.

Those condenser misting systems may claim to “boost efficiency,” but hard water tells a very different story. As the water evaporates off the coil, minerals like calcium and lime are left behind. Over time, that buildup coats the condenser coil, blocks airflow, and acts like insulation that traps heat inside the system.

The result is reduced efficiency, higher operating pressures, longer run times, increased energy bills, and premature equipment failure. In areas with hard water, mineral buildup can happen surprisingly fast and turn an expensive HVAC system into a maintenance nightmare. Clean coils and proper maintenance improve efficiency. Mineral scale does the exact opposite.

Those condenser “debris screens” might seem like a good idea, but in many cases they do more harm than good. Air conditioning systems are designed to move a massive amount of air, and when covers or screens restrict airflow, the system has to work much harder to reject heat.

That added strain can lead to higher electric bills, poor cooling performance, overheating, excessive compressor wear, and shortened equipment life. Regular maintenance and proper coil cleaning are far better solutions than wrapping the unit in material that blocks airflow. If the condenser can’t breathe, the system can’t perform.
