Austin and Brian recently met with the Coupeville School District Facilities Committee to discuss potential siting options for a future elementary school. Led by Wenaha Group, the conversation helped highlight the pros and cons, and missing details, for each of the siting options. Looking forward a continued partnership with Wenaha and the District for the best solutions for the families of Coupeville and surrounding areas!

Wow, that was amazing! This year’s PHnw Conference was such an inspiring and energy-filled two days of presentations, networking, and project tours.

The first passive building conference in the county hosted in a certified passive building, the Mount Vernon Library Commons provided superb comfort, indoor air quality, and acoustics throughout the day (as tested by Mike Fowler’s CO2 monitor!).

Kicking off with B.PUBLIC PREFAB's Happy Hour on Thursday, continuing with Friday’s incredible speakers, and closing out with the incredible bus tour, the conference brought together practitioners and product representatives from all aspects of the passive building community.

Thanks also to all our local food providers (Copia, Indulge Bakery, The Skagit Table, and Skagit Larder) who shined a spotlight on our fabulous local produce and sustainability. Looking forward to next year’s conference!

Recently Christine and Brian attended the Concertus Inclusion Summit at their Seattle offices. A very mentally "full" day spent in the company of people across the built environment. Presentations and discussions covered topics such as exploring inclusive practices in a changing environment and turning strategy into action. From the Keynote to the break out sessions it was a truly insightful and rewarding day.

Check it out - HKP Architects had graphics installed at the Mount Vernon Library Commons to accompany the Phius Certification plaque that helps visitors better understand the benefits of passive building design and certification.

As most of the strategies put into this effort are hidden behind finishes, we felt it was important for our community to know why they feel comfortable, why the library is so quiet, and how the City is paying `70% less for energy every year in this building.

HKP is a huge fan of libraries! This year's National Library Week's theme was "Find Your Joy" and there are few things that bring us more joy than creating beautiful, safe spaces for our communities to continue learning and growing. Here are a couple libraries we've had the pleasure of working on. We hope to see you in between the stacks!

HKP recently enjoyed an evening with other community supporters of the Skagit Preschool and Resource Center (SPARC), Their annual gala, held at the Mount Vernon Library Commons, showcased the good work SPARC does, as highlighted in their Mission Statement: "...providing accessible and comprehensive early intervention, education, therapy, and family support services for children with developmental delays, disabilities, or complex health conditions."

For HKP's 2025 Spring Event, the team gathered at Sauk Mountain Pottery for some artsy fun in the mud! Stephen and Nicola welcomed us with open arms to teach us about their history, including showing off their hand-built kilns. With the help of their feline assistant, we created mosaic tiles that formed a larger image.

See how it turned out and stay tuned to see what fun we'll have for this year's Spring Event!

HKP's Becca and Christine spent time participating in the DBIA Western Washington Chapter’s monthly program, "Risk Management is a Team Sport." Speakers Julia Doerner (McKinstry), Seamus Kelly (Mithun), Paul Winfield (Hensel Phelps), and Jeannie Natta (University of Washington) offered a thoughtful exploration of how risk is identified, communicated, and mitigated from early conceptual design through project closeout.

Drawing on their diverse roles across the Design‑Build delivery method, the panel highlighted the importance of transparent collaboration—illustrating how each discipline contributes unique insights to quantifying and resolving risk in order to deliver a successful, well‑coordinated project. Thank you to the DBIA Western Washington Chapter for a great meeting with stunning views from high atop the Columbia Tower.

HKP was honored to accept the Gold Award in the Public category at this year’s Northwest Masonry Institute's Excellence in Masonry Awards Gala. We applaud the City of Mount Vernon for their dedication to resilient and sustainable design choices that add civic pride and lower long-term maintenance. And we thank the talented masons with Northbound Masonry who brought the design to life.
