Fundamental #27. Always Remember We're A Family
I remember leaving my first interview with HCP thinking that it just felt like home. When I returned home from the interview, I remember telling my husband about this amazing company that had awesome core values, and just how easy it was to talk to management; I prayed that I was chosen to join that team. Once the call came in that I was offered the position, I was thrilled to say the least. My husband and I decided to grab a quick trip to Florida to celebrate before the start of my new journey. Little did we know what was coming…

We enjoyed 5 days of sunshine and were making plans to return home Sunday when my husband fell and broke his femur ball at the hip and would need surgery, followed by physical therapy. We were out of town in Florida when this happened and I was scheduled to start work that Monday. That call to April was one of the scariest things I’d had to do in a long time. I thought for sure my new “dream” job would be gone and they would never hold the position for me, but I had to place that call.

April’s first words were, “how is he?” I was about to fall apart and her next words were “do not worry about your job”. I went from terrified, to instant disbelief, to shock that this was happening, “we take our core values seriously here at HCP, and family comes first is one of those core values. Take care of your husband, the job will be here when you return.”

I honestly think any other company would have just thought “NEXT” since I was not able to meet the commitment I had agreed upon as a new hire. Many companies “talk the talk” but are not able to “walk the walk”. I have seen firsthand just how HCP honors those commitments. Family isn’t just blood, it is a feeling of knowing that someone actually cares about you, and knows if your state of mind is at peace, the rest will follow. The compassion I personally received from HCP will never be forgotten, I am proud to be a part of this family!"

Fundamental #3. See It. Own It. Fix It.
"See It. Own It. Fix It. means taking the time to see an existing problem, realizing that you’re capable of fixing it, and then having the motivation to get it done. Had I walked by and seen the condition of the stops a hundred times and wished “somebody” would do “something”? Absolutely. We easily become blind to opportunities to fix problems because they blend into our daily landscape or we get caught up in figuring out why somebody else ought to be responsible for fixing it.
Please take time to look at the world around you and See It. Own It. Fix It."

Fundamental #2. Check Your Ego at the Door
"Earlier in my life I worked at Domino’s Pizza. I started at Domino’s as a delivery driver, then started making pizzas. One day when I was a newer employee, my manager asked me “how do you get your crust to look so good?” I explained my technique to my manager that you need to set your edge, then stretch the dough into shape; that the most important step was to make sure the edge was set and firm. My manager then tried my method and was surprised at how easy it was and how good the final product turned out.
When we check our egos at the door, we can learn new ways of doing things that help make us, or our teams, better. The only way we can get better is to always be open to learning something new, no matter who we are learning from."

Fundamental #24. Do It Right The First Time
"When I started in the Safety role at HCP, I had so many projects in my mind that I wanted to get accomplished, and I wanted to get those completed fast. Whether it be changing all the lockout placards to the new template or looking at all guarding on every machine and making sure it is compliant, these safety items were on my priority list. I thought about it and knew that the best solution would be to proceed with the cell audits. We are taking time evaluating cells at both facilities and looking at guarding while updating the lockout templates and asking operators what they would like to see. From one perspective it may seem as if the cell audits take longer to accomplish; but at the end of the day we want to make sure we are compliant, safe, and are providing a good workflow for the operators. Proceeding with the cell audits ensures that we are taking the time to evaluate all aspects of safety and efficiency, allowing us to do it right the first time."

Fundamental #23. Practice Transparency
"In Customer Service we try to make as many people aware of customer situations, large orders, etc. to make things run smoother for both internal and external customers. The IQ process is an example of where we try to turn lemons into lemonade with process improvements and communication of any customer dissatisfaction issues. Customer praises are also passed on when received from external customers as they do recognize the extra efforts that are made by each HCP employee.

The importance of practicing transparency also applies in our home lives too. I had a decision to make back in June whether to worry our daughter Natalie in Florida that her Dad was in the ER, as I didn’t want to worry her since there was nothing she could do at that time being so far away. I immediately called Don for support asking what I should do. Don advised me that she needed to know; I followed his advice and Natalie was on a plane the next day to be with her Dad & I.

Practicing transparency is a team effort both at work and at home regardless of the situation. Communication is key to everything we do. Thanks for everything you do in taking care of our customers."

Fundamental #22. Assume Positive Intent.
"Assuming positive intent is believing that everyone is doing their job to the best of their ability and doing what is best for the company. Conflict is going to happen, but it is how we handle conflict that will determine if the outcome is positive or negative. If we can be compassionate and understanding of a person’s actions or words, it can make for a more positive outcome. We may learn that the person did mean well."

Fundamental #21. Embrace Change
"I have learned to accept and embrace change a lot over the last 6 months. I started a new job, moved into a new house, and I am getting ready to send 2 kids off to college. All of this happened during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced change upon all of us.
Since coming to HCP, I have seen a lot of changes that have resulted in improvements to our processes. I have also seen people stubbornly holding on to the old ways of doing things, which can slow the improvement process. Improvement is impossible without change. Change is necessary for improvement, growth, and development to take place. Change does not have to be drastic or sudden either; it can be slow and steady for improvement and growth to happen. I can see that there are a lot of good ideas and there are people willing to try new things at HCP.
The sooner you can start accepting, embracing, and seeking change, the sooner you can start enjoying life more. There are so many opportunities out there to discover. You cannot alter the fact that change exists, but you can adjust your view and approach to live a happier and more fulfilled life."
Larry Goon, Mount Vernon Shipping Supervisor

Fundamental #20. Be A Mentor
"I joined HCP in 2017, and at that time, the HR team consisted of Kathy Hill, Andy Finley, Donna Adcock, and Courtney Lehman. Joining the HR team was the most welcomed that I have ever felt starting a new job. Each team member mentored me by sharing their job knowledge and relevant experiences anytime I asked a question. I will forever be grateful for the guidance, wisdom, and kindness that each of them shared with me, not only when I first joined HCP, but also that they continue to share with me to this day.

Joining a new team, beginning a new job, tackling a new task, or starting something unfamiliar in general may sometimes be a little scary or unsettling, but having even just one person step up, show their support, and be a mentor can make all of the difference. The positive impact that you have on a person may be everlasting."

Fundamental #18. Be Relentless About Improvement.
"HCP has made improvements to our processes over the years that have greatly impacted our company and our customers. Here are a few that stick out in my mind. We used to make duct manually and put out around 500 joints in a shift with 2 operators. Now with the duct line, one operator can put out 1200 joints during a shift. I can remember running boot collars and cleats manually; now we have the 428 and 2074 presses. We used to bead starting collars on a manual, but now we have the starting collar line. There was very little guarding when I started working here; now all pinch points are guarded.
We should continue this trend. Keep in mind that improvements do not have to be monumental like the ones mentioned above; small improvements are also very important. Can you move something in your workstation to help you work more efficiently? Can you change something in your daily work process that will improve your accuracy? Can you change something about work routine that will help your coworkers be more efficient and accurate? Be relentless about improvement because the “that is the way we have always done it” attitude will not take HCP to the next level. "
