When I was a high school student, there was a steep rise in the number of teenage girls put on “the pill” for a variety of health reasons.

By the time I was teaching biology at the high school, the majority of my female students were starting it by the age of 14-16. I spoke out about this and attempted to have real conversations with them about taking care of the body and how unhealthy it is to take these pills; even if you have a condition that the pills seem to be treating. I was met with misinformation that came directly from my students’ doctors, or invitations to kindly remove myself from conversations about human health (which is absolutely in my curriculum!).

The thing is; many doctors are paid by pharmaceutical companies to sell their products. These products appear to treat problems caused by environmental factors, diet, or other medications that are being taken. And indeed, they may help, but at what cost? Wouldn’t it be better to get to the actual root of the problem and remove the thing that’s causing it in the first place?

Please be responsible for yourself, for your family, and especially for children who depend on you to make healthy decisions for them. Find a trustworthy doctor who doesn’t simply prescribe a pill and move you along the line.

It’s back to the classroom for me! If you are interested in learning biology for college credit at SBU in Mountain View I’ll be offering my class once again this fall on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-3:30pm: but WITH A TWIST!!
High school students can also take my class for college credit! See your school counselor for eligibility and to register.

YAY!! My final DonorsChoose project has been fully funded!! Students using the Anatomy in Clay models at Liberty High School will now be receiving another model so that students can work more independently and have more control over their own models - and more understanding of the human body. I'm so thrilled that I've been able to work on this project over the past few years and I can't wait to see how it continues to help students at LHS move into medical and veterinary related fields. :-)
