We’re buried in new fire truck work right now, with builds booking out as far as 2031. But when companies our team worked with back at our old millwright job call with an emergency breakdown, we go out of our way to get them back up and running. This asphalt plant was running around the clock until their dryer drum gearbox started to fail. They had a replacement rush-shipped in by 9 p.m., and we had them back online three hours later. I don’t miss doing this work every single day, but it’s fun to get back out there and turn big wrenches once in a while.

Modifications to Harrisburg Fire Department’s dual boat trailer. We removed the full width shelving in the front and fabricated a new shelving unit to hold 2 gas cans and 2 Hardigg boxes. That allowed room on either side to store the motors on 2 new Sternmaster motor carts, and tied down to new L-track that we installed. We removed the rear, upper boat support, and fabricated a new support closer to the front of the trailer to add necessary room when removing the lower boat. We also added a rear roller for the upper boat, additional tie down points and a notch in the front, upper boat support to clear the hull of the upper boat. Finally, we painted everything to match.

A little bit more fire truck work today for some of our regulars. This rescue got a new set of battery tools so we gutted most of compartment and started fresh. Removed the hydraulic hose slideout since that was going to be in the way of the battery tools and they’ll only be used as backup now. Used the existing tray base, fabricated and installed new side walls, moved all the hydraulic tools to the back of the compartment to allow space for the battery tools to be the most accessible, added a 4 bank Dewalt charger, and storage for extra spreader tips. We didn’t do the original upfitting on this truck, but we’re happy to be the ones that are called on now for projects like this.

Out with the old and in with the new for our friends over at Friedrich Insurance. The original backlit sign was installed in 1997 and they felt it was due for an upgrade. We made the center panel out of 12ga steel and framed it all out in 1-3/4” OD tube. We used 14ga steel for all of the layered panels, and held everything together with stainless binding posts. Sandblasted, primed, and powder coated to match the desired colors, and mounted to the existing uprights with stainless hardware. And naturally, we used 2 LED light bars to really make it stand out at night. Now that our part is done, they’re going to paint the posts and wire the lights.

Pair of hydraulic “lift carts“ that we fabricated for the local cast-iron foundry. Nothing too crazy or spectacular…simply improved a little bit on their existing design and made them a bit stronger since most of the new cart’s dimensions needed to be the same as the old ones. The hydraulic cylinders have dual footpedals to control the up and down separately, so the employees can keep their hands free to move the cart around while lifting and lowering the arm. 4” poly wheels in the front, and a 8” swiveling poly caster in the back.

Back to our old millwright life this week. We stick built this platform piece by piece, 40’ in the air because we couldn’t get any equipment into that area while the plant was running without blocking the areas they needed to access with the trucks and loader. Once we had the platform framed out, grating installed, and handrail around everything, we also installed 2 ductwork clean out boxes that we fabricated in the shop so that they can periodically clean out the heavy material buildup in the ductwork. Definitely took some creative rigging and some patience. This plant shakes so badly when it’s running, that when you put a level on something, it’ll actually separate the bubble on level!

Medical waste compacting dumpster repairs today. Replced one of the cylinders, a couple leaking hoses, repaired all of the worn out cylinder pin holes with 1/2” AR400 collars that we CNC plasma cut, and replaced a section of the wall.
