The EPA announced this week a New Rule that applies to the ongoing uses of Chrysotile asbestos within the United States.
According to the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO):
"Though this is a landmark step forward, its scope is limited.
It only addresses one of six asbestos fibers, and only applies to six cases of use, leaving the door open to other types of asbestos and other applications of this toxic chemical to remain legal in the future."
βWhile closing the door to chrysotile imports is a historic step, the EPA rule does not restrict importation and use of five other recognized asbestos fibers,β said Linda Reinstein Co-founder and President of ADAO.
βWe are also alarmed that the rule allows an unnecessarily long transition period and creates inconsistent compliance deadlines for certain asbestos users that will enable dangerous exposure to chrysotile asbestos to continue for years to come.β
For this reason, the ADAO and many other advocates are continuing to call for Congress to Ban Asbestos and ALL uses without ongoing loopholes.
