Old attic ductwork is not automatically a replacement project: and there is no universal rule requiring every duct system to be replaced at exactly 20 years.

The right next step depends on what an inspection finds: air leakage, inadequate insulation, moisture or condensation, pests, comfort problems, visible deterioration, and whether the ductwork is located in a hot attic.

ENERGY STAR notes that ducts can lose about 20% of the air they move through leaks, holes, and poor connections. Separately, DOE Building America guidance indicates that outside duct leakage can commonly range from about 3% to over 20%, depending on the home and system. These figures are not a universal measurement for every house: they show why inspection matters.
