On this last day of 2024 we have what is the biggest news of the year. After years of negotiating we are quite pleased to announce Round Engine Aero's acquisition of the surviving airframe remains of the Convair YB-36 Peacemaker. This is the ONLY B-36 of the 384 built to be in civilian hands!
The YB-36 was the second prototype B-36(XB-36), the first with the iconic bubble canopy. The construction of this historic airframe began in 1942, only a short time after America officially entered World War II. The Army Air Corps sought a bomber that could fly from North America to Europe and return, without refueling.
The war ended before our adversaries knew of the B-36, and the sites were now set on the Soviet union. The B-36 was the only aircraft in our arsenal with the range and payload to carry atomic bombs from American soil to the USSR. This airframe was subsequently transferred from Convair to Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico as part of Strategic Air Command's 72nd Bomb Wing.
With the addition of all jet bombers to the Air Force's inventory, the B-36 was phased out. A decision was made that for the history this airframe held, she deserved to be saved, and she was flown to be placed on display for all to see in front of the National Museum of the United States Air Force!
Unfortunately after a decade on display outside, the mostly magnesium body that also spent years in service in the Caribbean, was now in very poor condition. The Air Force, who was now moving their Museum, decided it would be much cheaper & easier to fly in another B-36 for display and let this one go.
In 1972, only 30 years after she was America's ace in the hole, she met the scrapper's torch. The caretaker previous to us acquired the cut up remains from the scrapper before it was smelted down and transported them to his property, where he partially reassembled the cockpit and placed it on display.
We acquired this airframe in 2024
We will be releasing additional information on this airframe including future plans and more photographs in the upcoming months. This aircraft & ALL parts we have for it are NOT for sale in any capacity! The watermarks are for the individuals that keep publishing our photographs without crediting us. Thank you!
Thank you to everyone else and have an incredible 2025!
