π§ Same Force. Different Neural Strategies.
How can children produce a steady grip force but still experience difficulties with skilled movement?
This is one of the questions we'll be exploring in our upcoming EMG Advances in Neurophysiology webinar!
ποΈ Talk: Less Flexible, Not Weaker: Motor Unit Firing in Children with DCD
We're excited to welcome Dr. Maaike Esselaar, a postdoctoral researcher at UniversitΓ€t des Saarlandes - Saarland University and Manchester Metropolitan University who will share how High-Density EMG (HDsEMG) is helping researchers look beyond muscle strength to better understand the neural control of movement.
Using Delsys HD-EMG technology, Maaike's research examines individual motor-unit firing strategies during low-force grip contractions in children with and without Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD).
π‘ Why does this matter?
The ability to produce the same force doesn't necessarily mean the nervous system achieves it in the same way. By examining motor-unit behavior, researchers can uncover differences in neuromuscular control that traditional strength assessments may overlook.
Maaike will also explore how these techniques could be applied to other clinical populations, including individuals with peripheral neuropathy, where changes in motor-unit behavior may influence everyday activities such as driving.
With a background spanning motor neuroscience, biomechanics, EEG, and HD-EMG, Maaike brings a multidisciplinary perspective to understanding how the nervous system controls movement across developmental and clinical populations.
π¬ Join us to discover how advances in EMG decomposition are opening new opportunities to investigate motor control, coordination, and neuromuscular function.
