How to Stay Cool When your Air Conditioning Goes Out

Isn’t owning your own home the greatest? But, it can be expensive, time-consuming, and responsibility-laden. The endless list of chores can seem overwhelming to you. Inevitably, something is forgotten and something breaks down. It happens to all of us. Unfortunately, your air conditioner seems to break down at the most inappropriate time! It happens right in the middle of summer on the hottest day of the year. Your local heating and air conditioning companies are busy, and you may not be able to have your A/C serviced for a few days. Is it just bad luck? Is your air conditioner out to get you? Of course it’s not! Air conditioners are most likely to stop working when they’re working the hardest when you need them the most! What can you do to keep cool when your air conditioner goes out? We has some great tips for you, just read on…

When your air conditioner stops working, first think of all the ways you can cool yourself down when you can’t cool your home. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing and drink plenty of water. You can put a towel under cold water, wring it out, and then wrap it around your neck. Wear it around your neck for a while. If you’d rather put an ice pack around your neck, you’ll probably want to wrap it in a washcloth or towel so it’s not to cold on your skin.

Use Fans

Turn on your ceiling fans (make sure they are turning counterclockwise) and place portable fans throughout the house. A nice breeze can go a long way in cooling you off.

Avoid Heat-Generating Appliances

The oven, dryer, and dishwasher create a lot of heat that warms your house every time you use them. Go outside and use your grill for cooking or think of eating foods that are served cold. A cool salad is much better than a hot bowl of soup when you’re hot. Instead of using the dryer or dishwasher, air-dry both your laundry and your dishes.

Keep Out the Sun and Humidity

Close your windows and blinds. Direct sunlight is a great way to heat up your home, and this is the last thing you want to do when the A/C is out. You may be tempted to open windows to let in some fresh air, but you’ll also be letting in the wet humidity of summer. If the nights are cooler and drier, go ahead and open the windows but only at night.

Consider Buying or Renting a Portable A/C Unit

If you know you might be without air conditioning for a few days, consider purchasing or renting a portable air conditioning unit. They range in price depending on their size and capabilities. If you’re looking for an inexpensive fix, you could purchase a mini portable air unit that cools your personal space. It may help you get through a couple of hot nights until the repairman can get to your home.

Keep up the Regular Maintenance on your A/C

Keep to a regular maintenance schedule. It’s the best prevention for costly repairs and unexpected replacements. Make sure your air conditioner is serviced every year, especially before the hot weather gets here. Your A/C is just like your car. You wouldn’t take a long trip across country without having it serviced first would you?

Don't Wait to Schedule Your HVAC Maintenance

Even the most organized and diligent homeowners will procrastinate once in a while. People are busy, schedules are crazy, and you have more to juggle than ever before. Trying to keep up with work demands, children’s schedules, and your to-do list can be challenging to say the least.

Some people use calendars and sticky notes, while many use their phones and organizational apps. Whatever you use to stay organized, make sure you don’t overlook keeping up with regular maintenance for your HVAC system. It is best to schedule early with Daily Heating & Cooling and put the appointment on your calendar. Done. Now you have one less worry.

Keeping to a regular HVAC maintenance schedule is so important for the longevity and efficiency of your HVAC system. Delta’s heating and air technicians are trained to recognize a problem before it becomes a big problem, and the last thing you need is to add “buy a new HVAC system” to your to-do list. Read below on why you should schedule your maintenance appointments early and not put it off until the last minute.

Summer and Winter Are the Busiest Times of the Year for Raleigh HVAC Companies

Make your HVAC maintenance appointments before the hot weather of summer or cold of winter. During the extreme temperatures, HVAC technicians are busy with repair work and installations. You’ll have a harder time getting an appointment if you put it off until the summer or winter. When you schedule earlier in the season, you won’t feel like you have to squeeze an appointment into their schedule. Instead, your appointment will fit your schedule.

Get It Cleaned Before It Has to Work Too Hard

A clean system will run more efficiently. An HVAC system that is full of dirt and debris will not run as effectively as it should. When your system isn’t working efficiently, it causes unnecessary wear and tear and shortens its lifespan.

Keeping your system clean and running efficiently at its optimal performance is what your trained technician from Daily HVAC will do during the spring and fall maintenance inspections. A clean HVAC system is ready to work hard for you during the summer and winter temperatures. Think of it as a marathon. You wouldn’t run a marathon without being ready. Stretching, preparing, and training are key. Keeping to regular maintenance in preparation for the marathon your HVAC runs during the summer and winter.

Waiting Isn’t Wise When Your HVAC Needs Repair

What if there was a problem with your heating and air conditioning system and it needed a repair? Would you put it off? Hopefully, you wouldn’t because you could make a bad problem worse. But what about when you don’t know there’s a problem? Well, you can’t fix what you don’t realize is broken. This is another reason why keeping a maintenance schedule is so important for the health of your HVAC system. It’s preventative care – preventing problems from arising, but also preventing unknown problems from worsening. Take care of your HVAC system so it can take care of your heating and cooling needs. You’ll have a happier home!

Don’t Wait!

Don’t wait until the last minute to schedule your maintenance inspection for your heating and air conditioning. Make it a priority and get it done! And always remember that keeping to a regular maintenance schedule is the best way you can care for your HVAC.

HVAC Tips for New Homeowners

Don’t forget to change the air filter
Change your air filter at a regular frequency, typically every 1-3 months. The regularity may depend on factors such as whether you have indoor pets, live in a part of the country where there is more pollen, dust in the air, etc. Mark a date on your calendar to assure you check it every month. Once a filter has significant debris on it, it is time to clean or replace it according to specifications. A dirty filter makes your unit work harder, making it less energy efficient and subject to more wear over time. One of the easiest ways to prevent having to contact a heating and air professional when your unit goes out is to change the filter regularly.

Don’t forget about the outdoor unit
It may be out of sight and mind, but your outdoor unit can become covered in leaves, limbs, or debris, especially after a storm. For an outdoor unit to work best, it must be clear on all sides, therefore use a soft broom to gently clean debris and anything else that may block air to it.

Understand the job of the return vent
Your return (the vent with the big filter on it) draws heat or cold as well as allergens out of the home while the the supply vents on ceiling or floor fill the rooms with air the temperature you have selected on your thermostat. When you close doors or block the return vent, your air conditioner is only doing half its job. Keep your home as open as possible to assure that air can flow.

Be careful concerning furniture placement
Strategically plan your home layout for optimal airflow. Placing furniture such as a bed or sofa over even one vent can completely change the temperature of a room, making your system work harder.

Have your unit checked at least twice a year
Your unit should receive maintenance for both hot and cold weather. It should be cleaned and fluid levels checked. Regular maintenance is affordance and cost much less than a new HVAC unit.

Know how old your unit is
When you buy a home, make sure you are informed on how old the unit is. If it is over 10 years old, then it could be approaching the end of its life.
