For over a century, Conrad Schmitt Studios has advanced a tradition of excellence in artistry and craftsmanship. The Studio was founded in Milwaukee in 1889 by Conrad Schmitt, the son of Bavarian immigrants. The firm remained in the Schmitt family until 1953, at which time it was purchased by long-time employee, Bernard O. Today, the third generation of the Gruenke family owns and operates the company, a reflection of the dedication and longevity which typifies the Conrad Schmitt Studios.

We always appreciate the opportunity to work on historic Wisconsin landmarks, especially those so close to home. St. John Lutheran Church was built in 1871 using native stone found in Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine area. As the church continued to grow, stained glass was added in 1907, becoming another part of the building’s history. We recently had the honor of conserving and restoring that historic stained glass while also installing new storm glass. Last week, our team completed the installation. We are Conrad Schmitt Studios; a team of artists, craftspeople, conservators, designers, project managers, and support staff who have been caring for and creating beautiful spaces since 1889. We are grateful for the incredible projects we are privileged to be part of, but behind every project is a group of talented people who bring their knowledge, creativity, and pride to the work every day.

Last week, we took a little time away from the studio and job sites to enjoy one another’s company and make the most of summer in Wisconsin. We are proud of what we create, but even more grateful for the people who create it.

At Mary Mother of the Eucharist Chapel, Bishop Robert Barron hired us to bring their vision to life through ornate, hand-painted stencils. The Diocese was very intentional with its color selections, each carrying its own meaningful symbolism: rose reflects the Diocese of Winona-Rochester, harkening back to the Native American meaning of “Winona,” “fairest daughter of the tribe”; fittingly, it represents Our Lady’s love and purity. Red represents the fire of the Holy Spirit; Blue points toward heaven; and gold symbolizes the glory and majesty of God. Through our liturgical decoration services, we help transform sacred spaces through time-honored craftsmanship, thoughtful detailing, and an appreciation for the symbolism woven into every design. A closer look at the artistry at St. Ann Parish in Coppell, TX. Shown here, you’ll find ornate hand-painted stencils, gilded details, and murals, with the largest mural in the church being the Transfiguration, inspired by Italian Renaissance master Raphael. The project also includes a new 20-foot reredos with hand-painted faux marbling, along with new bas-relief castings on the lectern and altar. It was a pleasure to bring this range of traditional artistry and craftsmanship together throughout St. Ann Parish.

Throughout St. Ann Parish in Coppell, TX, monumental murals, intricate ornament, and gilded details work together to create a space that invites prayer and contemplation. At the center of the dome, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is surrounded by eight Romanesque lunettes depicting nineteen saints, while the apse features a new Transfiguration mural inspired by Italian Renaissance master Raphael. Gold-leaf stars illuminate the blue ceiling, complemented by new scrollwork, decorative wainscot, and a Holy Spirit composition above the baptismal font. Each scene reflects a pivotal moment in her story, framed by symbolic ornamentation that unites heaven and earth through the recurring quatrefoil motif, while scallop shells reference the Sacrament of Baptism and the journey of faith. The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception in New Orleans, LA has been the spiritual heart of Notre Dame Seminary, where future priests gather in prayer, reflection, and worship. Created for the Seminary's centennial, our decorative program introduced six ceiling murals, seventeen saint medallions, twelve custom paint colors, two bespoke gold finishes, and 23 kt gold leaf accents, each thoughtfully designed to reinforce the sacred symbolism that shapes seminary life. Throughout our project at St. Ann in Coppell, Texas, we’ve had the honor of meeting with members of the St. Ann parish community and hearing what they are most excited about as they enter this new chapter. We’ve loved working alongside the parish every step of the way and sharing in their excitement for this beautifully transformed space. This week, we’re heading back to Texas to photograph the completed interior and capture all of the details that brought this project to life. We can’t wait to share the finished space with you!

St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tipton, Missouri, features a renewed decorative scheme. Our team designed and executed custom stencils, botanical motifs, Christograms, symbolic details, and gilded accents throughout the interior that complement the architecture and honor the church's history.
