Petroleum Electricity Generation Surpassed Natural Gas During Winter Storm Fern

Although petroleum accounts for less than 1% of total U.S. utility-scale electric power generation, regions such as New England rely on oil-fired units during winter periods when cold weather creates high demand. When Winter Storm Fern affected New England, petroleum was the predominant energy source starting around midday on January 24 and lasting until early morning on January 26. Since then, petroleum and natural gas have been fluctuating as the primary energy source.

With the upcoming extreme temps we are going to see remember to adjust your thermostats, especially if you have a hydronic heating system with radiators/baseboard and have larger swings in your programable thermostat.

Your domestic plumbing pipes for bathrooms are most likely run on the interior of your home. Heating pipes however are most often run along exterior walls making them prone to freezing and bursting if your heating system doesn't circulate regularly. The colder it is, the less time it takes for pipes vulnerable to air infiltration to freeze.

The majority of kitchen sinks & dishwasher plumbing also is plumbed along an exterior wall making them just as exposed to risk . If you have a forced hot air system there are places the heat won't make it to, and if water sits log enough to freeze in copper tubing, it will burst.

Lastly, avoid using supplementary heat sources as they will satisfy your systems call for heat and stop the circulation of hot water or forced air into the entire building envelope and increase your risk of frozen and burst piping.
