Every year, our Environmental, Health, and Safety Team hosts a friendly competition among our locations to Find It, Fix It!

In 2025, the focus was on ergonomic improvements, and our Ellwood Quality Steels team delivered, taking the win with a ladle backfill screw conveyor that helps make the job safer and more efficient.

This week ELLWOOD Quality Steels celebrated a significant milestone by producing the 250,000th heat in the melt shop that opened in New Castle, Pa, in 1985.

A heat is a batch of steel that is melted in the 45-ton electric arc furnace and poured into molds to create bottom-poured ingots.

“This is an incredible accomplishment for EQS and for the entire ELLWOOD Group,” said EQS president Mike Morgus. “Completing a quarter of a million heats through our melt shop is a testament to our hardworking team members, our commitment to quality, and our customers’ confidence in our ability to provide them a competitive advantage in their markets.

“I would like to extend a thank you to our customers who put their faith in us and to our more than 230 team members who work diligently every day to ensure EQS remains North America’s leading supplier of high-quality steel ingots.”
