Meet Kayla Turner, our new team member in New London!

Kayla recently graduated from Purdue University with an MS in Structural Engineering, and is joining e2 as a Project Engineer.

Kayla was drawn to structural engineering because she enjoys the challenge of understanding structural behavior and how it translates to building design, especially since the work results in a tangible product that directly serves others. She also felt the variety of work - whether it's new construction, retrofits, different building sectors, or different materials - offered a lot of opportunity to learn and work through unique situations.

Outside of the office, Kayla enjoys soccer, martial arts, and spending time outdoors!

We are incredibly excited to have Kayla on board!

With September officially here and the seasons changing soon, e2 is reflecting on an awesome summer!

We had our summer outing at the ANYA, went to a Woo Sox game, had some outdoor meals, and a Concord vs New London golf showdown!

Adaptive reuse projects can often pose unique challenges and complications. e2 was recently working at Quinnipiac University to transform an old office building into the new bookstore. This caused the space to be moved into the retail category, creating code complications with the loading criteria. Bringing the building up to code, exactly as written, would have made the project financially unfeasible. e2 had to get creative to find a way to keep the project alive.

The building consists of two levels, the lower level and the first floor. In retail building code, the first floor has a higher loading criteria than subsequent higher floors. The first floor of the proposed bookstore did not meet the first floor retail criteria, but the lower level did. e2 and the project team determined the best course of action would be to apply for a code waiver, and have the lower level be designated as the "first floor". The waiver ended up being granted, and the project is now completed!

Meet two of our newest New London team members, Kacie Wines and Ryan Mitchell!

Kacie recently graduated from Lehigh University, and after two summers of interning with us, she is returning as a Project Engineer. Kacie's favorite part of being a structural engineer is being able to watch projects go from drawings to an actual building. She enjoys getting experience with all different types of projects so she can continue learning!

Ryan is bringing over a decade of structural experience into his new role as a Senior Engineer. Ryan's favorite part of being a structural engineer is the creativity and critical thinking skills needed to find solutions, as well as the reward of seeing a structure be fully constructed and utilized, knowing he played a part. He enjoys the challenge and collaboration that comes along with new steel and reinforced concrete builds. The more complex, the better for Ryan!

We are thrilled to have both Kacie and Ryan on board!

Project highlight: Puritan Medical Co. P4

This project was a renovation and expansion that enabled Puritan to produce 200 millions COVID-19 test swabs per month. The structural steel-framed manufacturing complex is over 330,000 SF and was renovated in less than eight months.

Project Highlight: The Stevens & Smith Center for History and Democracy in Lancaster, PA.

This museum and education center was developed by LancasterHistory to delve into the legacies of Congressman Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Hamilton Smith and their roles in the Underground Railroad.

The $22 million project included the restoration, stabilization, & rehabilitation of Stevens' 18th-century home, which is listed on the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

e2 is grateful to have been part of bringing such an important project to life. We encourage everyone to go see their amazing programming and exhibits if you can!

We are excited to announce that Kenny Ngo has been promoted to Project Engineer II!

Kenny has been an invaluable asset to the e2 team. He's an incredibly hard worker and a great team player. After just over a year with e2, Kenny has learned so many new concepts and has been taking on increasingly difficult tasks.

We're so glad to have Kenny on board, and we're excited to keep watching him grow!

This week is National Health Center Week. We thought we'd celebrate by showcasing one of our recent projects: The Cornell Scott - Hill Health Center Recovery and Wellness Center. This amazing facility offers services for addiction treatment, adult medicine, behavioral health, women's health, and more for the surrounding community.

The Recovery and Wellness Center is a three story, 33,000 sf building that was constructed on an urban infill site in downtown New Haven. The project was constructed as an embankment building with the basement level opening up to the rear giving the building four floors of usable space.

The existing site was extremely challenging to say the least. Pockets of existing soils were undocumented fills that required foundation design alterations once construction started. The front of the structure abuts a rubble masonry gravity bearing wall that was in poor shape, but held up the roadway and sidewalk in front of the facility. The foundations were "benched" to avoid undermining of the gravity walls. Further complicating issues was the presence of high groundwater which required dewatering.

The structure above is a structural steel-framed building with composite floor slabs. Lateral systems were a combination of braced frames and moment frames of steel.

e2 is proud to have been part of the creation of such an impactful place. We're also incredibly grateful for the amazing project team, who recently took first place in the CBC Project Team Awards in the Healthcare Large category.
