Exciting News for Louisiana’s Coast! 🌊📣

The Deepwater Horizon Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group is proposing two major restoration projects to help restore wetlands, coastal, and nearshore habitats injured by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill: the East Orleans Landbridge Restoration Project and the Raccoon Island Restoration Project.

These projects are included in the Draft Phase 2 Restoration Plan #8.1, which is now available for public review and comment through June 17, 2026.

The East Orleans Landbridge Restoration Project would create and restore approximately 1,320 acres of marsh habitat and construct nearly 15,000 linear feet of shoreline protection using sediment dredged from Lake St. Catherine. The preferred alternative is estimated to cost approximately $101.2 million.

The Raccoon Island Restoration Project would create and restore beach, dune, tidal, and marsh habitats through sand fill placement and shoreline protection. The preferred alternative would restore approximately 102 acres of beach and dune habitat and 308 acres of marsh habitat, including critical bird-nesting areas, at an estimated cost of $145.5 million.

The Trustees will also host a public webinar on Monday, June 8, 2026, at noon CT to present the draft plan and receive public comments. Community members are encouraged to participate and share feedback as these important restoration efforts move forward.

Project Spotlight: White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area (WLWCA) Master Plan🌊🦆

Spanning 72,000 acres of freshwater marsh and agricultural land in Vermilion Parish, the WLWCA provides critical wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities while serving as a leading model for wetlands conservation in Louisiana.

In partnership with Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, Royal led the development of a forward-looking plan through a 12-month planning process. The plan focused on coastal restoration, facility revitalization, revenue generation, and long-term partnerships to address ongoing challenges including shoreline erosion, subsidence, and aging infrastructure. The strategies outlined in the plan also support the area's farmers impacted by flooding and help improve waterfowl populations for hunters across the region.

Royal assembled a multidisciplinary team with expertise in coastal planning and science, civil and coastal engineering, and architecture to develop the plan. Royal also worked closely with LDWF and CPRA to leverage their expertise in waterfowl management and coastal restoration. With the WLWCA Master Plan now complete, Royal’s engineers are actively advancing the identified coastal restoration projects.

Recently, members of spent time volunteering in the community garden at Eden Centers for Hope and Healing, an organization that provides long-term housing and recovery services for survivors of human trafficking. 🏡🌱

Over the past several years, Royal has proudly partnered with Eden House through volunteer efforts, home improvement projects, and continued support of their mission to create safe, welcoming spaces for residents.
