Why do we celebrate Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is celebrated to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and that enslaved individuals were now free. This announcement came two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln.
