Gibbs Construction is proud — and a little sad! — to celebrate the retirement of Senior Project Manager Jimmy Wehrlin, a cherished member of the Gibbs family since 1989.

After rejoining us following Hurricane Katrina, Jimmy was a driving force in our rebuilding efforts for the St. Bernard Parish School Board. Over 20 years, his expertise, generous spirit, and dedication to our community have left a lasting mark on everyone lucky enough to work alongside him.

Thank you, Jimmy — we wish you a retirement as rewarding as the incredible career you've built! 👏

Our next stop on the tour takes us to the lakefront campus of the University of New Orleans, where Gibbs Construction helped shape the alumni experience with a landmark facility.

The Homer L. Hitt Alumni and Visitors Center (2003) is a 17,000 SF two-story steel structure featuring the Geoghegan Grand Ballroom, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing sweeping views of Lake Pontchartrain. Connected to two existing brick buildings, the project incorporated a World War II-era smoke stack, the last remaining piece of the Naval Air Station that existed on the site previously.

Today we pause and pay tribute to those who died while protecting the United States of America. We thank the women and men who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of our nation and hold their loved ones in our thoughts.

Our office is closed today to allow our team to spend the holiday with their families and friends in gratitude and recognition of these individuals.

Reaching new heights—literally ✈️ As we continue our tour through five decades of landmark construction, we're looking up at one of the most recognizable structures on the New Orleans skyline: the FAA Air Traffic Control Tower at Moisant Airport, now Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.

Standing 207 feet tall, this tower has guided aircraft safely in and out of New Orleans for more than 30 years—and it's still the same tower in use today.

Among the engineering milestones: on June 26, 1992, Gibbs poured the largest single pile cap in company history at the time—450 yards of 6,000 PSI concrete, placed in a single pour using a 117-foot concrete boom truck. Shortly after, crews began setting 92 precast concrete modules, each weighing 18 tons, stacking them into four columns rising 180 feet high.

Every flight that lands in New Orleans passes under the watchful eye of a tower Gibbs built.

Fifteen years ago, Nick Williamson joined Gibbs' U.S. Custom House project as a college intern. Today, he's one of our most respected Senior Project Managers — and one of the best mentors on our team.

Over his career at Gibbs, Nick has led landmark projects like redevelopment of a full city block on Magazine Street and the award-winning restoration of Entergy's Claiborne Substation, all while investing in the next generation of builders around him.

Today he's leading our Bonella A. St. Ville School project in Harvey, bringing to life the incredible vision of our partners Jefferson Parish Schools, Lachin Darre' Architects, and Volkert.

Nick, thank you for your commitment, your leadership, and for making everyone around you better. 👏

The Maumus Center, our first stop in St. Bernard Parish on the Gibbs tour, is where history, innovation, and education meet.

Built for the St. Bernard Parish School Board, this one-of-a-kind campus combines the restoration of the 1920s Arabi Elementary School with new construction to create a hands-on art and science learning center for local students.

From a restored Art Deco theater to a glass-canopied atrium, planetarium, and agricultural learning garden with a working sundial, every element was designed to inspire discovery.

This project required detailed craftsmanship—from restoring hand-painted ceilings to fabricating precision terrazzo installations that function as educational tools.

We're proud to have been a part of this critical project supporting New Orleans' unhoused community 🤝

"The Harry Tompson Center is a nonprofit day shelter operating within the larger St. Joseph Rebuild Center. Each morning when staff open the doors, as many as 200 people line up on Gravier Street, where they are greeted by name and asked what they need. Showers, laundry, case management, medical care, phone access and a safe place to rest are all available, free of charge.

“'Our hygiene services act as a gateway to greater care,' said Emily Bussen Wain, executive director of HTC. 'While our guests wait for services, we work with them to understand their immediate and long-term goals and provide them with the resources and assistance they need to move forward.'"

Local architecture and design firm Practis—the same firm (then known as Wayne Troyer Architect) that originally designed the center nearly two decades ago —
