Beautiful Saturday morning in north Phoenix, and the HARE crew is already hard at work. ☀️🐇

Today we’re on site at Valley Life Church completing a two-unit commercial HVAC installation for their facility.

This is one of those jobs where the behind-the-scenes work is pretty incredible to watch.

With the crane in position below, each rooftop package unit is carefully lifted from the ground and brought up and over the building. From there, our crew takes over on the roof, guiding the equipment into position, communicating with the crane operator, and carefully aligning each unit with the rooftop curb and existing duct openings.

There’s a lot happening in a relatively short amount of time, and every movement matters. Commercial installations like this require planning, coordination, experience, and a team that knows how to work together safely and efficiently.

Not a bad office view for a Saturday morning, either. 😉⛰️

67° inside when it’s 110° outside. Is your A/C supposed to be able to do that?

We recently came across a home where the thermostat was set to 67°F while the outdoor temperature was around 110°F. The indoor temperature was holding closer to 78°F, and understandably, the homeowner (new to AZ) was concerned that the A/C system was not reaching the temperature they had selected.

Here’s the important part: setting your thermostat lower does not make the air coming from your vents colder. It simply tells the system to keep running until the home reaches that temperature. In this case, the A/C was being asked to maintain a 43-degree difference between the outdoor temperature and the thermostat setting, which is a pretty tall order during an Arizona summer.

Air conditioning systems are sized based on many factors, including the size and construction of the home, insulation, windows, sun exposure, ductwork, airflow, and our local climate. When temperatures climb into the 105° to 115° range, the heat load on your home increases significantly. Even a properly operating system may run for long periods and still struggle to satisfy an extremely low thermostat setting during the hottest part of the day.

We also hear people say that an A/C system should only be able to cool a home about 20 degrees below the outdoor temperature. That is a common misconception. The temperature difference HVAC technicians typically evaluate is between the air entering the system and the conditioned air leaving it, not simply the outdoor temperature compared with the thermostat setting.

Of course, if your home normally maintains temperature without a problem and suddenly starts falling behind, or the indoor temperature continues climbing while the system runs nonstop, that may be a sign that something needs attention.

Now we’re curious. What temperature do you keep your thermostat set at during an Arizona summer? And when the temperature outside reaches 110° or higher, do you adjust it?

💧 Is Your A/C Suddenly Not Cooling? Your Float Switch May Be Protecting Your Home!

We are receiving a growing number of frantic calls from homeowners whose A/C systems have suddenly stopped cooling. In many cases, the system has not completely failed. A safety float switch has been activated.

A float switch is a small but important safety device that monitors condensation produced by your air-conditioning system. If water begins backing up in the condensate drain line or collecting in the secondary drain pan, the switch may shut down the system to help prevent water from overflowing into your ceiling, walls, or home.

Monsoon season can contribute to float switches being activated more frequently. As Arizona’s humidity rises, your A/C must remove more moisture from the air, which means it produces more condensation. A properly installed and freely flowing drain system should be able to manage the additional water. However, the increased volume can reveal a developing restriction or drainage problem that may not have been noticeable during our drier weather.

Common causes include:

• A clogged or slow-draining condensate line
• Excess water in the secondary drain pan
• Dirt, debris, or buildup inside the drain line
• A frozen evaporator coil beginning to thaw
• An improperly pitched drain line
• A drainage or installation issue
• A float switch that has shifted or needs adjustment

Most homeowners will not be able to tell whether a float switch is responsible, especially because these safety devices can be installed and wired differently. Depending on the system, the A/C may suddenly stop cooling, the thermostat screen may go blank, or water may be visible in an accessible secondary drain pan.

Please do not climb into a hot attic, open equipment panels, reposition the switch, or attempt to bypass it. It may be the only thing standing between you and costly water damage.

Before you pay to “insulate” your ductwork, please read this!

We’ve seen some conversation recently about adding insulation over existing attic flex ductwork, and we want our neighbors to have the right information before spending money on something they may not actually need.

The photo below shows what flex duct looks like. Flex duct already comes manufactured with rated insulation. You can see the inner liner, the insulation layer, and the outer jacket. If your flex duct is properly installed, intact, sealed, and performing as it should, adding another layer of insulation over it is not something we would typically recommend.

If flex duct is damaged, torn, crushed, kinked, disconnected, or the outer jacket has been compromised, the proper repair is to address or replace the damaged section. Covering damaged ductwork with more insulation does not fix the underlying problem.

And if one room feels warmer than the rest of the home, insulation is not always the cause. Comfort issues can come from duct sizing, airflow restrictions, air leaks, poor support, return air limitations, static pressure, register placement, or overall system design.

A proper inspection should come before any recommendation. During our maintenance visits, Shann checks the visible ductwork and will always let you know if something needs attention.

We know home comfort can be frustrating, especially when one room never seems to cool the way it should. Our goal is simply to help our neighbors understand what they’re being offered, ask the right questions, and feel confident before spending money on ductwork improvements.
