The last few weeks have been head-spinning and heart-wrenching. Two-thirds of the work we expected to do this year is abruptly on pause or cut, leaving us with time to call on our camel superpowers to figure out how to pull through. And yet— life goes on.

Workers still need accessible training. Manufacturers still need to fill open positions. Job seekers still need safe ways to apply for jobs without sleeping overnight on the streets outside factory gates. So Shimmy keeps going.

A “growth mindset” feels almost unnatural in moments of tremendous uncertainty like this, but our team is out in the field, tuning out the noise, listening to jobseekers and learning. Holding steady is its own kind of resilience.

As news of workforce reductions due to automation in Bangladesh sank in this week, we at Shimmy were asked repeatedly: What can we do?

The answer is simple yet profound. To intervene effectively, you must either upskill workers to compete for jobs running automated machines or reskill them for roles in industries with less near-term risk of displacement.

But whether upskilling or reskilling, we’ve learned one crucial lesson: never underestimate the importance of helping workers believe they can adapt and succeed.

AI and automation will require all of us—probably weary from the seemingly constant inflammation of this world—to continuously build our skills to stay relevant.

Confidence in our ability to grow and change is the foundation for meeting this moment successfully.

The misfits. The line balancers. The save-the-day technicians. The unsung heroes who work that extra shift so their colleague can make it to a birthday party. The trainers who find that perfect metaphor, making complex operations suddenly crystal clear.

The lunchroom cooks whose Pizza Fridays are the highlight of the week. The owners who go without pay when customer payments are late, just to keep their people afloat.

The software reps who dig deep to solve a problem — not push an upsell. The compliance managers who walk the tightrope between rules and real life.

The machine makers who thought about ergonomics and saving your back. And to all the generations of workers who came before us, who built families on the strength of decent manufacturing jobs.

We’re thrilled to announce we’ve trained our 10,000th worker!

A huge thank you to our incredible team, partners, and workers for believing in our mission. Your support makes these achievements possible!

Our results speak for themselves - most trainees have landed higher-level positions with better salaries, over 50% have been promoted to advanced machine roles, and 72% of our trainees are women, supporting gender equity in manufacturing. This results in more than a 20% increase in workforce efficiency for manufacturers.

Today we remember the victims of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire of 1911 where 146 garment workers lost their lives. The tragedy led to better fire safety laws and grew the International Ladies Garment Workers’ Union. May their memory push us to keep pushing for better working conditions and fair wages.
