⚡ When do I bring in the generator?

I don’t use battery percentage alone to decide.

I look at 🔋 battery level, ☀️ available solar, ⏰ time of day and ⚡ expected loads.

If solar can’t replace what I’m using fast enough, I bring in the generator as the next recovery layer.

The goal: recharge before I’m forced to react.

☀️ If I were building a solar backup system from scratch, I wouldn’t start by buying panels or batteries.

I’d start by understanding how the energy moves through the system.

For beginners, there are four things I think you should understand first:

☀️ 1 — Solar panels create the energy.
But production changes throughout the day depending on sunlight, weather and panel conditions.

⚙️ 2 — The charge controller manages that solar energy.
In my system, the MPPT controllers regulate the solar coming in and send it to my 24V battery bank.

🔋 3 — The battery bank stores the energy.
It lets me store solar energy during the day and use that stored energy later when the sun isn’t available.

⚡ 4 — Your loads determine the system you actually need.
Before worrying about how many panels or batteries to buy, figure out what you need to keep powered, how much energy those loads consume, and how long you need to run them.

The basic idea is simple:

☀️ SOLAR → ⚙️ MPPT → 🔋 BATTERY STORAGE → 🏠 YOUR LOADS

Once you understand that flow, sizing and expanding a system starts making a lot more sense.

Don’t build your system around the equipment you want. Build it around the loads you need to protect.

And remember solar production isn’t guaranteed every day. What happens when solar can’t put the energy back fast enough? That’s where the next layer of my backup plan comes in. 👀⚡

☀️ My solar panels don’t recharge my power stations first and there’s a reason for that.

During a power outage, using energy is only half the plan. I also need a way to put that energy back.

Here’s how my recovery system works:

☀️ STEP 1 — Solar recharges my 24V battery bank.
During the day, I use the available sunlight to put energy back into my main 24V LiFePO₄ bank.

🔋 STEP 2 — The battery bank stores that solar energy.
Instead of depending on the sun being available exactly when I need power, I store that energy for later.

⚡ STEP 3 — I use the 24V bank to refill my power stations.
As individual units get lower, I can transfer stored energy from the bank back into the power stations that need it.

So my outage strategy isn’t simply:

Battery → appliance → eventually empty.

It’s a cycle:

☀️ SOLAR → 🔋 24V BATTERY BANK → ⚡ POWER STATIONS → 🏠 PRIORITY LOADS

When the sun is available, the cycle starts again by replenishing the 24V bank.

That’s why I look at backup power as a system, not just a collection of batteries.

And if solar production can’t replace what I’m using fast enough, that’s when another layer of the recovery plan becomes important. 👀⚡

Grateful for another day, another opportunity, and another chance to keep moving forward.

Sometimes you don’t need to have everything figured out. Just wake up, give thanks, stay focused, and take the next step.

⚡ When I test my backup system, I’m not trying to see if I can power EVERYTHING.

I’m testing whether the things that matter most will keep running when the grid actually goes down.

My priorities are simple:

🥶 #1 — Refrigerator & freezer
Protect the food first.

📡 #2 — Wi-Fi, lights & communication
Stay connected and keep the essentials running.

🍳 #3 — High-power appliances only when needed
Microwave, kettle and toaster get used when needed then turned back off.

☀️ Then comes recovery.

How much battery did I use? How much solar can I put back? And when would I bring in the generator?

That’s why I test my system now, not during the emergency when I actually need it.

A backup system isn’t ready because the batteries are full. It’s ready when you know exactly what you’ll do when the power goes out.

🔋 SUNDAY MAINTENANCE: Portable Power Doing More Than Backup Duty

Today wasn’t about an outage or camping.

It was simply time to give the electrical system in my vehicle a little preventative maintenance.

I put my XS Power D4800 on the IntelliCHARGER for a maintenance charge, but instead of running an extension cord from the house, I brought out my EcoFlow DELTA 2 Max.

⚡ DELTA 2 Max → IntelliCHARGER → D4800

Simple. Convenient. And another practical use for portable power that has nothing to do with the grid going down.

One thing my off-grid and car-audio setups have taught me:

Maintenance now can mean fewer problems later.

Check the connections. Watch the voltage. Keep the batteries properly charged. Don’t wait for something to fail before giving the system attention.

At 9 PM, my solar panels produce 0 watts, but my refrigerator is still running because my batteries stored energy during the day. The next morning, solar recharges them for the next outage. That’s why I built a backup system not just a solar system.
