Working late night of December 6, 1979, a 33 years old man had the “spectacular realization” that would soon turn on its head. He imagined a mind-bogglingly brief event, at the very beginning of the , during which the entire universe expanded , going from microscopic to cosmic size. That night was the birth of the concept of "cosmic inflation" and that man is our "scientist of the day" today.

For the first time, researchers from Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) have directly detected water molecules on the surface of an asteroid using data from NASA's Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA).

Analyzing four silicate-rich asteroids, the team found mid-infrared spectral signatures indicating water was present in two of them.

The discovery, detailed in the Planetary Science Journal, sheds light on the distribution of water in the solar system and could aid the search for extraterrestrial life.

The SwRI team plans to use NASA's James Webb Space Telescope for further research.
