🔍 Hidden Energy Costs: Did you know elevator braking systems can add up to 30% to a building's cooling load?

Elevators don't just consume electricity directly; they also impact HVAC demands. Sometimes a lot.

That's why a holistic approach to building efficiency is so important. Have you considered the indirect energy impacts of your building systems?

💼 Proptech has its place, but submetering isn't it.

Don't get us wrong, we love a good app. But when it comes to complex systems like submetering, you need more than algorithms. You need people who understand the whole picture.

We're excited to announce our own Shannon McAuliffe is speaking at in Boston next month!

True to his style, Shannon will speak plainly in his talk, "Doing something while you're doing nothing," or how to use your existing building data and infrastructure to pinpoint where and how to optimize your operations AND SAVE MONEY.

He's a friendly Southerner braving Boston in February, so please stop by to give him a warm welcome (or rib him about his travel choices – we won't judge.)

🏢 True story time: The Downtown Debacle

Facilities director hires proptech for submetering. The result?

✅ Unresponsive service
✅ Failed meters
✅ Data hostage situation
✅ High risk of tenant disputes

Just because a system spits out numbers, doesn't mean they're correct. Sometimes you need good old-fashioned expertise.

basic building needs:
- tenants (ideally paying ones)
- electricity (flashlights are not a long-term solution)
- accurate data from your submeters (math > magic)

According to McKinsey, U.S. data center energy demand will triple by 2030.

From 25 GW at the end of 2024 to over 80 GW in just six years. ⚡

To grasp the scale of 1 gigawatt of power:
It’s equivalent to 1.887 million photovoltaic (PV) panels or 0.5 Hoover Dams.

By 2030, the projected 80 GW of energy demand represents a staggering increase, reshaping energy markets and requiring innovative strategies for grid stability and cost management.

In 1980, storing 1 gigabyte of data cost $40,000.

Today, it’s LESS than a penny.

The drop in storage costs has transformed how we collect data, especially with IoT devices generating more than ever before. But here’s the catch: more data doesn’t always mean better insights.

When data becomes noise, it’s harder to make decisions.

So what’s the key to cutting through the clutter?

1. Focus on data tied to specific goals.
2. Prioritize quality over quantity.
3. Analyze data that solves real problems.
4. Collect data accurately from the start.

What do you think—does more data help, or does it hurt?

Consumers and small businesses face a ~70% rise in electricity costs by 2029. The cause? Surging energy demand from AI data centers.

AI's power needs create significant risks for NYC property managers and building engineers managing operational expenses.

Why does this matter for buildings?

1. Rising electricity costs could inflate operating budgets, especially for energy-intensive properties.
2. A granular, per-kWh analysis of electricity use can reveal opportunities for savings and help identify inefficiencies that may otherwise go unnoticed.
3. Proactive investments in submetering and energy efficiency will be critical to mitigate cost impacts and maintain financial sustainability.

This projection is a wake-up call to prepare now for a future shaped by AI-driven energy demands.

🚨 Proptech Alert: Is your submetering solution more tech than meter? 🤔

Sure, proptech is shiny and new, but it's no substitute for actual expertise.

True story: When a facilities director hired a proptech company for submetering, she got less than she bargained for. She got:
✅ Unresponsive service
✅ Failed meters
✅ A data hostage situation

Let's confirm your suspicion: The "close doors" button on an American elevator really doesn't do anything.

But it's for a good cause. Today, elevator doors are programmed to stay open for a specific period to allow people with mobility challenges to board safely. So, if you're feeling impatient about waiting for the door to close, remember that the next time you're in the building, you may need an extra few seconds.

And feel free to whack the button if it makes you feel better.
