Nano Nuclear Energy Inc. is pleased to announce that, "Idaho National Laboratory Completes Pre-Conceptual Review of Nano Nuclear Energy Inc.’s Proprietary Low-Pressure Coolant Microreactor “ODIN” POWERED BY US AT HALEU Energy Fuel Inc. ⚛ ⚡

Following NANO Nuclear’s announcement of its Strategic Partnership Project Agreement with INL in April 2023, INL, operated by Battelle Energy Alliance under the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), advanced its examination of NANO Nuclear’s designs for its proprietary advanced microreactor “ODIN” through a panel of national laboratory engineers and scientists. The review was requested by NANO Nuclear to provide an external audit of the technical work completed to date on the “ODIN” microreactor. The review served to ensure that NANO Nuclear has thoroughly considered the necessary aspects of its design and the applicable regulations for advancing the technology towards a commercial product.

“Working alongside Idaho National Laboratory and their team of esteemed professionals has been immensely beneficial to NANO Nuclear,” said James Walker, NANO Nuclear Energy’s CEO and Head of Nuclear Reactor Development. “Idaho National Laboratory is a great resource to help the development and evolution of our advanced nuclear reactors. Their recommendations will serve to both optimize our reactor designs, and ensure these developments simultaneously align with national standards and licensing requirements. The panel delivered tremendous value to us and our ‘ODIN’ project. The planned review of the ‘ZEUS’ reactor design is expected to provide that project with the same external input and direction which has so significantly benefitted ‘ODIN’.”

Eugene Shwageraus, Lead on ‘ODIN’ Reactor Engineering, said, “INL expertise in nuclear reactor technologies is unmatched. It is reassuring that INL engineers found our design concept technically sound. NANO Nuclear expects that INL will perform a similar review of its proprietary “ZEUS” microreactor in February 2024.

"In the Carolinas, every time we flip a switch, turn on the AC, or run our laundry, we have nuclear power to thank. Representing about a third of the electricity generation in North Carolina and more than half in South Carolina, it’s by far the largest source of carbon-free power in the region.

With the world aiming for carbon-neutral power generation by 2050, in accordance with the Paris Agreement, the United States signaled its commitment to achieving that goal at COP 28, joining more than 30 countries in calling for the world to triple its nuclear power generation by 2050. Yet, there’s one massive problem with the U.S. nuclear goals. Just one nuclear reactor has been built from scratch in nearly 40 years...

Advocates of the technology like James Walker, the CEO of Nano Nuclear Energy Inc. believes not only is the technology possible, but it’s necessary to create a carbon-free generation source that can run anytime or anywhere.

“The reason why we’re here now and the world’s come to the conclusion we need triple is we spent decades going after other options like wind and solar and they haven’t paid off in the ways we’d hoped for,” he said. “They didn’t have the consistency and the capacity factor, they were too locationally dependent. It doesn’t give you the energy security the country wants.”

Nano Nuclear Energy Inc. is currently working on a smaller version of an SMR called a microreactor, which Walker hopes will be even easier and less expensive to build. To get there though, he said he believes the country needs more time to build its nuclear infrastructure back up and it will likely take until the end of the decade before SMRs hit the U.S. power grid.

Duke Energy declined to comment on their planned SMR facility, but in a statement spokesperson Bill Norton said this of the company’s investment in nuclear: “A diverse resource mix including new nuclear – which is the only carbon-free generation that’s available 24 hours a day – is absolutely critical to maintaining the Carolinas’ competitive advantage.”
