West Indian Scientist of the Day: Dr. Henry I. C. Lowe 🇯🇲

Born in Jamaica in 1939, Dr. Henry Lowe is a Jamaican scientist whose career has spanned medicinal chemistry, biotechnology, health sciences, and the development of medicines from Caribbean plants.

A graduate of The University of the West Indies, Lowe went on to complete postgraduate studies in Australia and the United Kingdom and conducted additional academic work in the United States. His research has focused extensively on the medicinal potential of Jamaican plants, particularly compounds being investigated for applications in cancer treatment.

One major milestone came through work involving chrysoeriol, a cannabis-derived compound developed for investigation as a treatment for acute myeloid leukemia. The program received FDA Orphan Drug Designation in 2017.

Lowe has also spent decades building Jamaica's scientific capacity as a researcher, educator, entrepreneur, and public servant. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Order of Jamaica in 2012.

West Indian Scientist of the Day: Professor Suresh Narine 🇬🇾

Born in Guyana in 1966, Professor Suresh Narine is a Guyanese scientist whose work spans chemistry, biomaterials, and sustainable technologies.

His research has focused on finding new uses for renewable resources, including transforming plant-based oils and other natural materials into innovative products with applications in industry, health, and sustainability.

Professor Narine has built an internationally recognized scientific career while maintaining strong ties to Guyana and contributing to the advancement of science and innovation in the Caribbean.

His accomplishments are a powerful reminder that world-class scientific innovation is being driven by researchers with roots throughout the Caribbean.

West Indian Scientist of the Day: Professor Shirin Haque 🇹🇹

Professor Shirin Haque is a Trinidad and Tobago astronomer who made history as the first Professor of Astronomy at The University of the West Indies and the first in the English-speaking Caribbean. Her work spans astrobiology, observational astronomy, cosmology and solar astronomy, while her teaching and outreach have helped grow astronomy research and education across the region.

Her story is a reminder that Caribbean science reaches far beyond our shores—and all the way to the stars.

West Indian Scientist of the Day: Professor Marcia Roye 🇯🇲

Professor Roye is a Jamaican biotechnologist and molecular virologist internationally recognized for studying geminiviruses—plant viruses that can cause major crop losses throughout the Caribbean. Her research has helped identify these viruses and develop strategies to protect crops and strengthen regional agriculture.

Her work shows how Caribbean science can directly support farmers, food security and healthier communities.

West Indian Scientist of the Day: Dr. Rudranath Capildeo 🇹🇹
Dr. Capildeo was a Trinidadian mathematical physicist whose research explored space, time, rotation and gravity. His work included “Capildeo’s Theory,” which had applications connected to early space exploration.
He was also a mathematician, educator, barrister and Trinidad and Tobago’s first Leader of the Opposition—an exceptional example of Caribbean achievement across science and public service.

West Indian Scientist of the Day: Professor Oliver Headley 🇧🇧

Professor Headley was a Barbadian renewable-energy pioneer who helped advance solar water heating, crop drying and solar power throughout the Caribbean. His work helped establish Barbados as a global leader in practical solar-energy adoption.
