In the 1850s, Mount Everest was still known to British surveyors as Peak XV, long before it became a global symbol of human endurance.

Its height was calculated during the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India, one of the most ambitious mapping projects of the nineteenth century.

Because surveyors could not simply climb to the summit with instruments, the mountain had to be measured from far away using triangulation.

They took observations from multiple stations, corrected for distance, temperature, atmospheric refraction, and the curvature of the Earth, and then spent years working through the numbers.

The final calculation came out to exactly 29,000 feet. Fearing this number was so clean that officials and the public would dismiss it as a suspiciously rounded estimate, they added two feet to the published finding, publicly announcing it as 29,002 feet.

The mountain was later named Everest after Sir George Everest, a former Surveyor General of India.

He reportedly objected to the honor, arguing that his surname could not be easily written in Hindi and that native speakers would struggle to pronounce it.

Following a joint announcement by Nepal and China in 2020, the current official height of Mount Everest is recognized as 29,031.69 feet, or 8,848.86 meters.

This cosmic object has a mass that is nearly the same as Jupiter's, but it spans only 40% of the gas giant's physical size.

Scientists believe that 1438b is actually the ancient remnant of a star whose outer layers were siphoned off by its more massive neighbor, a millisecond pulsar.

Although the outer layers of the planet were stripped away by the intense gravity of the pulsar, they left behind a dense core composed primarily of oxygen and carbon.

Because of the extreme atmospheric pressure acting upon this core, scientists believe that the carbon crystallized into a massive structure.

Ultimately, this means that 1438b is an alien world that is, for all intents and purposes, a cosmic diamond that is roughly five times larger than Earth.

Residents across New England were startled Saturday afternoon, May 30, 2026, by a powerful sonic boom caused by a meteor exploding off the coast of Massachusetts.

The event occurred at approximately 2:06 PM EDT and was reported throughout the Boston metropolitan area, reaching as far north as southern New Hampshire and as far south as Rhode Island.

Satellite sensors detected a significant atmospheric flash east of Boston that did not correlate with any local thunderstorm activity.

The flash and subsequent boom are consistent with a bolide, an exceptionally bright meteor that fragments and explodes upon entering the atmosphere at high speeds.

While the pressure wave was intense enough to shake homes and rattle windows across a wide radius, seismic data confirmed that no earthquake occurred.

Experts estimate the object was approximately three feet wide and traveled at roughly 75,000 mph before fragmenting at an altitude of 40 miles, releasing energy equivalent to 300 tons of TNT.

No injuries or structural damage have been reported, and NASA scientists confirmed the breakup ultimately produced a meteorite fall right into the middle of Cape Cod Bay.

This atmospheric event provided a rare and harmless daytime display of celestial activity for the region.
