When the Eiffel Tower opened in 1889, it faced intense backlash from artists and intellectuals, who described it as an “eyesore” and a “monstrous” metal structure unfit for Paris. More than 300 prominent figures signed a protest demanding it be stopped, but construction continued as it was built for the World’s Fair.
Originally intended to be temporary, the tower was scheduled to be dismantled after 20 years. However, its usefulness for radio transmission and scientific experiments ultimately saved it from demolition.
Now, exactly 137 years after its opening, the Eiffel Tower stands as one of the most recognized landmarks in the world, visited by millions each year and widely seen as a symbol of both Paris and modern engineering.

A study published in Scientific Reports found that in mice, a bacterium called Chlamydia pneumoniae — which can cause pneumonia in humans and has been found in the majority of human brains affected by late-onset dementia — can travel up the olfactory nerve directly into the brain within 24 to 72 hours. When nasal tissue was damaged, the infection was worse, and the mouse brains responded by depositing more amyloid-beta protein — the same protein that forms plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease. The researchers emphasize the findings are in mice, not humans, and that amyloid-beta plaques being a cause of Alzheimer's is not yet confirmed. But they suggest that damaging nasal tissue through nose-picking or plucking nose hairs could reduce the protective barrier between the outside world and the brain — and recommend further human studies to investigate the same pathway.
