Meet Emma Rice, one of Genspace’s newest instructors and your guide into the weird and wonderful world of slime molds! 🧠

In the upcoming hands-on workshop, Working with Slime Mold: A Living Collaboration, you’ll explore how these brainless organisms can learn, remember, and even respond to mood-altering chemicals, all while creating living art.

“Slime molds can learn and hold memories despite having no brain. That’s what makes them so fascinating.” – Emma Rice

Join Emma in working with slime mold. You'll discover how it is used in both science and art and get to play with it yourself: https://loom.ly/aO5bxSY

Coming from a highly vocational education system that has evolved alongside rapid industrialization, transforming Taiwan from an agrarian to a high-tech manufacturing economy, Petrichor aims to revive a transdisciplinary understanding of the arts and sciences that has long been missing. Petrichor Lab, an extension of Petrichor, will be Taiwan’s first multi-use community lab, focusing on bringing together artists and scientists alike for collaboration and creation.

Your support helps us connect with and uplift the work of global pioneers like Petrichor. See you at the exhibit in September!

Aurea Andrades is a designer who merges traditional techniques with innovative, eco-conscious practices. With a foundation in sewing and upcycling, she began by reworking discarded textiles into fresh, functional pieces. Combining her background in biology with her interest in sustainability, Aurea expanded her practice to incorporate the use of bioplastics derived from gelatin, integrating these biodegradable materials into her garments to minimize environmental impact.

In addition to her work with alternative materials, Aurea is exploring the use of bacterial dyes, specifically cultivated on cotton kurtas. This bio-dyeing process utilizes the natural properties of bacteria to create sustainable colorways, providing a more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional textile dyeing methods.

Your support helps artists like Aurea reimagine the future of design. See you at the exhibit in September!

Lorraine Cruz (they/them) is a multidisciplinary researcher, maker, and designer born in the Dominican Republic and based in New York City. They recently earned an MFA in Design and Technology from Parsons School of Design, where their thesis focused on a relational-material investigation into mycelia and bioplastics. Their work explores the intersections of decolonial thought, material inquiry, and the relationship between human and more-than-human systems.

Lorraine’s practice seeks to intervene in Western knowledge production and challenge extractive systems through the use of futuring as both a lens and a methodology. By approaching research as a tool for narrative and iterative worldbuilding, their work reimagines alternative futures grounded in care and the life cycle of things.

They are currently the Artist in Residence at Genspace, where they continue to investigate the interplay between synthetic plastics and mycelia as active materials, revealing cycles of decomposition, relationality, and the subtle aliveness of matter itself.

Sally Kong (she/her) is a software engineer, artist, and hobby biologist based in Brooklyn, NY. She has built artist tools and 3D production pipelines for feature animation and games at Blue Sky Studios, Netflix, and Rockstar Games. Her creative practice revolves around fusing technology with traditional crafts to translate the poetry in living systems into familiar forms.

See you in September to celebrate what’s possible when science meets imagination!

Grace Morenko is a New York-based architect and biodesigner whose work bridges ancient
building techniques and emerging materials. Her current series of mycelium vases, grown over
hand-crocheted jute forms, explores the intersection of bygone craftsmanship, biomaterial
innovation, and historic preservation.

Grace works at the forefront of sustainable and affordable housing as an architect at Curtis +
Ginsberg Architects, while also contributing to coastal restoration as a researcher with City
Island Oyster Reef, where she explores bio-materials for oyster habitat regeneration. Her
Fast Company, DNA Paris Design have recognized previous work with Terreform ONE,
Green Good Design, and Rethinking the Future.

Caroline Chou’s background in microbiology, community public health, and visual arts has led her to develop a multidisciplinary artistic practice centered on microbial ecologies. In the past, she has utilized performance art, biomaterials, poetry, and animatronics to convey the dynamics of microbial communities. Not bound to a particular medium, Caroline’s work is driven by interdisciplinary research and rooted in narrative.

Inspired by the replenishing and interconnected relationships microbes have with the world around them, she aims to make science accessible through multiple senses and bring together the community, scientists, and systems of power in conversation.
