Unlined lets soft daylight glow through, but the fabric takes the full force of the sun and fades faster. Lined adds a second layer that blocks more light, gives a fuller drape, and protects the decorative fabric. Interlined adds a third layer for body, insulation, and the most structured, luxurious drape.

Sunny, south-facing room or a bedroom? Go lined or interlined. Want soft light in the living room? Unlined or a sheer works well.

1. Uneven fading. The front is lighter than the folds.
2. Brittle or torn fabric. It splits along the folds or frays at the edges.
3. Blinds that won't work. They won't lift, tilt, or hang straight.
4. Sagging hardware. The rod bows or the brackets pull away from the wall.
5. They don't fit your needs anymore. The room is too bright, too dark, or too exposed.

Silk fades quickly in direct sun and can weaken and split over time. Cotton and linen fade too, especially in deeper colors. Polyester and solution-dyed acrylics keep their color much longer, which makes them a good fit for south- and west-facing windows.

Already have your fabric picked out? Add a lining. It's the most affordable way to protect a custom drape, since the lining wears down instead of your drape. Sheers, shades during peak sun, and UV window film help too.
