The United States Navy traces its official origins to October 13, 1775. On this date, the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia and passed a critical resolution authorizing the acquisition and fitting out of two armed vessels. Manned by crews of 80 national sailors, these initial ships were tasked with intercepting British supply transports to prevent mu*****ns from reaching enemy troops during the American Revolutionary War. Though the maritime force was temporarily disbanded after the war and later re-established under the Naval Act of 1794, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Elmo Zumwalt designated October 13 as the official Navy birthday in 1972. Accipiter honors the service's historical lineage, its global evolution into a premier naval power, and the legacy of all personnel who have served under its flag.
