Hip-hop raised us. Now it has a school. 🎤🏫

Today, the Bronx School of Hip-Hop opens its doors to its inaugural ninth-grade class—and I’m proud that STELLA, the Hip-Hop AI chatbot avatar we developed at Create Labs in partnership with the Hip-Hop Education Center will be an integral part of the school.

STELLA helps people explore the women who shaped hip-hop through HHEC’s Fresh, Bold & So Def archive curated by MD
Featuring DJs, emcees, b-girls, graffiti writers, organizers—especially the women whose contributions deserve to be studied, celebrated, and carried forward.

As Mayor Mamdani scales back AI use for younger students, we agree that protecting independent thinking and human connection matters. Students also deserve to see positive social-impact uses of AI that reflect their culture, honor their history, and invite them to ask deeper questions.

That’s the opportunity we see with STELLA: supporting teacher-guided exploration, encouraging students to examine original sources, and showing them that they can help shape technology themselves.

Special love to the young women of the Hip-Hop STEAMHER Accelerator at BELA, acknowledged for envisioning and developing STELLA alongside HHEC’s Research Committee.
